Sun Hat .

I have just had news that a family member who works for British Waterways and works outside all day is having to have a melanoma removed from his face.Its amazing how many people don't wear a hat for outside stuff we should all be careful. Do you wear one, I will from now on ?....

I dont as I get too hot lol and cant bear them lol I also dont always use suncream a s by the time I go out everyone has gone to school work etc then I cant always reach some parts and I wear strappy tops. I find suncream whatever the make, makes me sweat more and feel sticky yuk. I know I should but I dont stay in it as long as I did when I was a teenager after getting sun stroke.

I hate wearing hats, but after I burnt my head a few years ago it's a hat every time for me now - stupid thing was I always made sure the children wore hats, just didn't take my own advice

I always try to cover up for gardening work. I have a cool long sleeved linen shirt that keeps the sun off and keeps me cool. I do have a couple of hats but find they get in the way a bit. I apply sun block too. Its a pity I did not do all of this in my younger years - the sun is very ageing - compare the skin on your but to any skin exposed to the sun!

I have worked outdoors for a lot of my adult life and have had 2 melanomas removed already - I am only 38! For the last 10 years I have used SPF 25 - 40 depending on the weather.

Both my doctor and I think that the problem started in the 70's when we never thought about sun protection, as a child (from a redhead family) I burned a few times.

As a teenager I remember sitting in the shade fully covered while a couple of my friends covered themselves with lard to 'accelerate' their tan

My OH, Scared55 or KK as others know him had a melanoma removed from his ear at the end of last year and he thinks that it is related to working in the middle east in the late 70's. He always wears a hat when he goes outside in the sun now but I think the damage was done all that time ago so, if you have a tendency to burn then please do wear a hat - you never know.

I don't like hats they make me hotter. But my children always have a hat on in the sun and factor 40 on.

I would wear a hat but I cant seem to find one to fit. There seem to be less and less available these days.

We wear the straw hats we got for our medieval re enactment on the plot, they are lightweight, with a really wide brim and keep the sun off your face, ears and neck, they also have a tie on them so if it is windy they won't blow off.
When the three of us are up there working on the plot together we look like a little armish community!!

I usually wear a hat - usually a baseball type hat as it also keeps the sun out of my eyes. Good advice - everyone take note.

I hate wearing hats both for gardening and for golf but, with the thatch thinning a little on top, if I don't wear some protection when it is very hot I end up with a throbbing and very uncomfortable head! Like today!!!!

I can never find a hat to fit but do often wear a buff round my head as I find they keep me cooler and keep my hair off my face. A friend of mine has one of those big floppy '70s style cotton sunhats which looks really great but my head is too big and the stall she got hers off only sells them in one size and that's too small for me!

I wear a hat with a large(ish) brim as don't fancy sunstroke. Also wear sun tan lotion on exposed skin (especially since I got sunburnt in Cornwall a few years ago and ooooohhh the pain. Certainly don't fancy skin cancer and/or skin like leather - think thats why people always say I don't look as old as I am.

My hubb wouldn't let me out without a hat and suncream and exposed bits covered! Bless!
Thing is, despite having oriental skin, I do burn on shoulders, neck, chest.... Last summer we spent a lot of time building chicken house & run and I would wear vest tops. Hubb still laughs when he sees my back as he seems to think I still have a tan-line there!
