Full of admiration

I love my garden, I love growing my own veg. But after a couple of hours out there this morning I'm full of admiration for you lottie holders. I'm happy pottering around and then nipping indoors for a sit down and a cool drink - I know I wouldn't have the self-discipline to tackle somewhere away from home.

As I was planting out my 40 sweetcorn seedlings in the blazing sun (at 9.00am no complaints, just ), I couldn't imagine how I would tackle any more than that. So a very humble round of applause to all you lottie holders. And as for those of you with more than one allotment. . .

Yup, that's what sheds are for I don't really fancy doing anything in the greenhouse today though

I usually get up the lottie between 7-8 and leave at 11 when the sun is right up, then toddle back down again after 7 to water things and to potter.
Wouldn't even consider being up there in the afternoon as there is no shade then atall and it isn't good for my noggin to have some on it too much, i have had sunstroke a couple of times and don't fancy it again.

I am lucky cos there is woods at the back of my plot so most of the time my shed and sitting area is in the shade.

whats that saying about,mad dogs and english men,we went early 8.30 and did a 2 hour plant up,we going back again later on,after tea,
we could do with this heat in a few more weeks,for the melons and butternutts,with some gentle rain every other evening when we asleep lol,but nature is not like that unfortunatly

It's only been getting to 18C up here, and we always have a cool breeze off the sea keeping it chilly. (I swear we get Scottish weather)

I planted out another tray of sweetcorn today, did a load of weeding, then moved a bunch of 8 foot canes from one lotty to t'other.
Managed to have a sit down and a beer at 6pm, when it was getting quite cold again.

I got up early and did a bit then we went out for the day.....then was back there a few hours before dark.

I did a little bean planting session at my lottie yesterday before 10.00 (been weeding at the home garden before that) then went at 10.30 to meet the rest of our village Britain in Bloom team to do some summer planting in the village. One villager came out to us with Solero* ice lollies - ahhh, cool and fruity and SO welcome! Mad dogs and English women! We finished about 1.00 p.m.

Wouldn't admire what I'm doing with my allotment at the moment - which isn't a lot.

Plan to get there tonight after work however and change all that.

I sweat like a pig in a barbecue factory at the best of times - so midday heat is a killer for working in.

Garden looks presentable though.

I am in constant admiration of those that have a fully productive allotment though.

Yesterday got to lottie at 06:30. Loved it. What a beautiful time of day. As for doing a bit of pottering, then nipping in for a drink and a sit down - Wonderful. That's what sheds are for too!

Our village is in a bit of a hollow and yesterday morning when we had a cuppa on the deck at the back door it was 38 degrees. It was too hot to do anything in our garden let alone dig an allotment. Hats off to you indeed.

Was up there most of Saturday and as a result felt a bit sicky on Sunday so didn't go up as planned in the morning and left it until about 5ish. There is no shade at all on my plot in the afternoon and not much in the morning and even the shed was tropical when I opened the door. I have another 10' by 4' bed to dig but am not even thinking about it until it cools down a bit as I'm pathetic in either extreme of temperature (and I know it wasn't THAT hot but it is to me). However, I'm really enjoying it all and it's looking really good now that I'm managing to plant out some of the home grown stuff, instant allotmenting!

Back to the oringinal post - I'm impressed that anybody has room for 40 sweetcorn plants in their back garden. I only ever managed about 9 and am not going to have room for many more on the plot (not going to be a problem if they don't start growing a bit quicker either!)

My lottie is a 600 mile round trip!!!!

Got loads of sweetcorn and squash ready to put in next week.
The goosegogs should be ready when we leave- and the strawberries about now.
Most of what's there- including the asparagus -is for the taking by the guy mowing the paths and area under the fruit trees.
Will spray spuds for blight before we go- although they are a blight resistant variety.
Keep thinking we'll have to give it up- but we've spent so much on fencing and raised beds - and there is a small chance we'll return next year, that we're keeping it going.
