I'm with Tony on this one...blatant vulgarity, racism or campaigning is one thing...Censoring a forum on the grounds of differing opinions is entirely another.
A forum belongs to its contributors those who moderate are not responsible for members opinions. Just because someone disagrees with another's opinion on politics, religion or extra terrestrials does not mean that either should be; or have the right to be, offended....or further still to bleat 'I'm offended' thus faining a position when they are losing the debate.
Example...I dislike supermarkets. this might be viewed a political and economic debate yet very relevant to GYO. I had a couple of great rants on here about it. where do you draw the line? what is political?
It is a fine line you tread here. Heated debate is a healthy thing; while dumbing down a forum is not good for its health. I enjoy playing devil's advocate from time to time. and why can't we discuss religion, sex, drugs or politics? they touch our lives...this is not a dinner party at which we are trying to impress/avoid offence.
I have not viewed these deleted debates thus I make no comment on these....but I make a general point in favour of free speech here.
As Tony points out we don't, afterall, have to read those threads with which we disagree.
I rarely read the general chit chat forum these days, largely because it is vacuous drivel with no substance....the sort of thing that offends nobody but interests nobody either...please don't make it any more boring.....am I allowed to say that?

As mentioned in my first post here at the top; it is Campaigns that are unwelcome, not discussion.
Campaigning is saying 'I hope everyone here is with me when I say to / you must vote for / this person/party', Discussion is saying 'What do people think of this'...
The forum belongs to the magazine however, and can't be seen to be aligned to one political party or other. Neither is this a free speech forum.

I started a thread about a week ago which was campaigning for one party. The mods deleted it, and sent me a PM politely explaining why. I thought that was fair enough, and changed my sig, which also briefly promoted the party in question. I don't see why there needs to be any resentment: this is mainly a gardening forum, after all.
