  • Hayfever

So I get hayfever pretty badly, but only in the morning.. I get a blocked nose and sneeze about a hundred times and then I'm ok... but I was talking to a guy at Winchester farmers market who made local honey and beeswax, because my mum always insists local honey is a cure for hayfever. he said that it apparently sometimes works, but he has his own honey every morning and it never helps him.

does anyone have any good hayfever prevention tips, as I hate shelling out £god knows how much for every pack of hayfever pills!

Look in Grow your own, July issue as it says that nettles are supposed to limit effects of hay fever, also i know that the Grow your own drugs dude made a hayfever remedy. Could google nettles to see how you use them, they are so cheap as they are free!!

Asda is really cheap at the moment. I think I paid 58p for 14 pills.
I have to take them every day from March onwards
I alternate between ceterizine and loratadine, because on their own they don't seem to work.

btw, my hayfever is worse in the evenings. Perhaps the pills are wearing off by then?

loratadine tend to be the longer lasting one, but you do develop immunity if you are on them long term so alternating is good, or perhaps if sneezing is bad a beclometasone spray can help, but it takes a few days to become effective

I got some local honey last year for oH as he suffers badly from hayfever. He took a spoonful everyday and after a few weeks the symptoms improved.
I thin the honey comes from about 4 miles as the crow flies whch means all the bees shoudo be eating the same pollen as he is allergic too thus enhancing the chances of it working
And put vaseline up your nose to catch the pollen before it gets up there!

Hayfever tends to get worse in the evenings because as the air cools the pollen drops down and therefore is at a lower level, hence hayfever sufferers tend to complain of worse symptoms.

Have you tried an Indian head massage, Acupuncture or your local Chinese Herbalist! My sister had good results with the first two, and an almost total cure with the herbalist! Good luck!

Hans - I alternate between two houses so I don't think that it's necessarily my pillow.

It is generally the morning that I sneeze, and then I'm fine... I can't guarantee it's hayfever, and only some pills seem to work (lotradine definatley dosen't) It's really getting on my nerves now too !

They reckon cetirazine ? works better than loratedine, shame cos Morrisons appear to have stopped doing theirs. Apparently putting vaseline round your nostrils traps the spores and helps.

Boots have just started selling a device you insert in the nostrils for a few mins a couple of times a day. No idea how it is supposed to work, but I can't imagine them advertising something that doesn't work (not least because they couldn't afford all the refunds to dissatisfied customers).
