Some of you may remember a while back, in November, we offered a home to a Japanese student at short notice. She has been a wonderful addition to our family, and my DD has truly felt she gained a sister.
Sadly, it is time for her to leave us to return home, and tonight we went out for an 'early' birthday celebration for DD, and a farewell dinner for JD. Some friends helped us to celebrate and both the girls were given presents from us all. When we returned home, at about 10pm, so the girls could stay up late watching DVDs together, we thought we ought to check the weight of the case one last time. JD had added a few things, but was sure it was 22.8kg (limit 23kg).
Then she wanted to put in Johnny Depp, but he was too heavy, the case went to 23.2kg. Another present was a lovely union jack mug, but that weighed in at 400g! Johnny went into the hand baggage, but was too long, by 6 cm! It looked as if he wouldn't be able to make the journey, but then a brainwave, we took him out of the protective tube, and put him carfully in the center of the case. Success, she now has Johnny Depp locked deep in the depths of her case, until he arrives safely in Japan. (A poster only, sadly to say, showing her favourite pirate). The mug is in the hand baggage, which has no weight limit. Our friends have no idea just how much time and effort has gone into this packing, and getting the weight right. We threatened her with having to wear all her clothes home if she wanted to take back so much, 2 boxes have already been sent seperately at a cost of £195!
Loads of laughter as the case came back and forth off the scales, with jokes about the weight and length of said pirate. She will be picked up at 7.15 in the morning, so we need to be up and about early, but somehow, I don't feel much like sleeping myself yet. I think the tears will flow freely in the morning.

She told us her best memories of England were of camping, and her trip to Portsmouth with us.
