Eating garlic may also help...although I saw something last year that attempted to disprove it,I have always found it to work.
Also Piriton...or a cheaper nonbranded version.I'm not so sure that they only target certain peeps, but more that certain peeps react differently to their bites. There's been evenings where I've definately felt them bite me,but then when we get in there's no sign/irritation,yet Andi & Ash will be covered.A bit too tired to go into all the scientific explanations, but I think the swelling & itching is caused by your bodies reaction to whatever it is they inject into you when they bite to let them suck your blood! Some of us react to it,others don't...Lovely creatures!the fates lead him who will;him who won't they drag.
Happiness is not having what you want, but wanting what you have.xx

Thats interesting re: piriton - DH suffers from hayfever so has been taking it for weeks, but he still sprayed his self with stuff at IOM - mmm, maybe I didnt eat enough garlic (strange!) to ward off those pesky little innocent nibbles...........be interesting to see how hes got on tho when he gets back. I've never known a place worse than the IOM for mozziesBernie aka DDL

Last year was so bad I hardly dared go out in the garden! My standby Avon skin so soft dry body oil (the green one) didn't work, (the U.S. army use it as an insect deterrent. And jungle formula wasn't much good either. I got a bite last night!I have plenty of vit b so I'll start taking that.
A vet once told me that everyone gets bitten, but not everyone reacts.( but then he was talking about fleas!)Mad Old Bat With Attitude.
I tried jogging, but I couldn't keep the ice in my glass.

I love Marmite (we get through a lot!) and the little biters love ME! We also use a LOT of garlic. I get bitten every time, OH gets bitten occasionally.
Proper insect repellent seems to work, and I keep a 'clicker' which reduces the itchiness sufficiently that I then DON'T scratch the tops off every bite (as long as I remember to use it)!Flowers come in too many colours to see the world in black-and-white.

Piriton doesn't prevent bites, it just reduces the allergic reaction. Lavender doesn't seem to make any difference here - I have loads of it all over the place, but still get devoured every time a step outside. My legs and arms are destroyed, not to mention my b**bs! (don't know how they managed to get in there, I was wearing a fleece zipped up to my neck!). DS told me not to wear skirts any more because my legs were so badly bitten!
I'm definately going to give vit. B a try, as nothing else seems to work.Last edited by sweetiepea; 13-06-2009, 11:56 AM.A good beginning is half the work.

I find piriton helps with the reaction to bites and is worth using, and I find Autan very good for keeping them at bay. Clothing is no deterant to mozzies as they have a huge (in length) thingy (can't think what it is called) to penetrate the skin to get at the blood. I can usually cope with mozzie bites the ones that really get me are the horse flies. Takes weeks to heal and ends up with quite a sore where I can't stop scratching.

Skin-so-Soft from Av*n - 'green' dry oil spray or bath oil will help.
Formerly 'woodland fresh' now 'soft and fresh' - long time since I bought any - so just look out for the 'green' one in range.
Used in places like Scotland by Film (Braveheart) and TV industry where midges are rife.

One of my main problems is with Horse Fly bites, they can get quite nasty. I discovered (on the vine, naturally) that what we as kids called 'Cuckoo Spit' is the home of Horse Fly larvae. The only Cuckoo Spit on my lottie is all over the Lavender, which at least implies that it doesn't worry Horse Flies, though it might deter your bog-standard mozzie.Into each life some rain must fall........but this is getting ridiculous.
