When I discovered over the weekend that my friend has had a serious riding accident, I thought the curse was well and truly alive. She is still mostly paralysed from the neck down. Me and OH are helping out with little things, but they do feel little, as we can hardly walk for her.
However, I have heard from another friend this morning, back Oop North. Just over three weeks ago, she was planning to end her life. All the letters were written, plans were in place, her Mother had died after a long illness and she felt she had nothing to live for. A couple of her friends (including me) have been in constant contact with emails, phone calls and letters (and I've sent her a 'self-help' book I found very useful when I was depressed) and she checked herself into a MHU to stop herself from carrying the deed out. She's started getting on with the nurses to such an extent that she has now agreed to start volunteering as a Patient Counsellor, so will be occupied, is starting an Access Course and has plans to start a Nursing Degree in 2010. She's wanted to be a nurse for many years, but she has had such bad depression, it's been impossible. I really hope she's turned a corner for good, now, as she seems the most positive I've ever seen her, since I got back in touch in December (when I joined Facebook). I'm absolutely thrilled for her! Good eh?
p.s. The book is The Invitation, by Oriah Mountain Dreamer (yeah, I know..., lol!)
