Who in their right minds would contradict The Tattieman???
I only write things on one site on the net (apart from boysahoy.com of course) and I have never noticed anyone having a nemesis. There have been some heated debates, some temper tantrums and even some name calling (before being hoiked by the mods) but everyone calms down afterwards and all is once again serene (ish).
I really enjoy this forum precisely because it IS so friendly, full of knowledge and I can have a laugh.

That was my thought too Snadger. Just because we're paranoid though, it doesn't mean they AREN'T out to get us!

Bob sounds like I always miss the spicy bits, never seen any temper tantrums OR name calling, seen heated debates but tend to stay clear once it's warmed up. Never seen any nematodes though

I had to find this thread, sorry Tattieman,I think I just found my nemesis.
I visited my friend yesterday-sometimes her neighbour pops in for a cup-folk about 60,gardener but mainly flowers.
So we started yapping about veg-This folk got me shocked.According to him:
1.I should cut off the foliage from my tatties once they finish flowering-tatties still will be growing in the ground-this is to prevent the blight getting them and to help the tatties mature in the ground.
2.As I'm struggling with caterpillars on my brassicas-he said the only way to prevent them is to grow them under fleece-no netting in any case,it won't help at all...
3.Mentioned the disastrous germination of my french climbeans-I have about 5 plants out of 100 seeds from Blue Lake and Cobra. They are doing well so I said to him-I might not eat them this year but let the pods mature to save my own seeds from them for next year's growing. The guy said they won't grow from self saved seed,it must be bought every year.I said yes,F1 needs to be bought but Cobra and Blue Lake are open-pollinated so I can save the seed from them. No,they won't grow.
4.I should cut top of my sunflowers to get more flowers of them.

I switched the conversation to flowers but I felt like rubbish-the guy to me was talking chicken manure ad trying to lecture me about the things he doesn't know a lot about.Or am I being arrogant???

No, even if he is in any way right [ie HE may not be able to grow self saved seed because he is a muppet and didn't leave it long enough to mature], he should accept that all gardeners have their own quirky ways of doing things and there is more than one way to skin a grapefruit.

I blame the dumming down of the net...when it was all text and BBS. This GUI has let everyone on.

On each point he is a little bit right and a lot wrong (as such people so often are).
If blight has started on the spuds, cutting the tops off will prevent it getting into the tubers, but of course they can't grow any more with no leaves to feed them!
caterpillars, well fleece MIGHT stop the butterflies (probably would) but so may a lot of other options (of course 'garden' netting won't....)
Of course self-saved seed will grow. Even F1 will grow, but it won't 'breed true', you could get anything from that! (and you may get some oddities from any self-saved seed, but that is very different from it 'not growing'). There is a slightly increased risk of disease from self-saved seed, but it is marginal.
Flowers come in too many colours to see the world in black-and-white.

                                Don't upset yourself Tattieman.
On this forum we appreciate your advice.
If you think there are people out to contradict you on other forums then, if it upsets you, then just don't go there.
Stay here where you are appreciated.
