I'm a huge fan of the books featuring the city watch - Sam Vimes is smashing (he reminds me of my OH - very cynical, and I love it when he goes all 'Columbo'). 'Guards Guards' is great, 'Men at Arms' and 'Night Watch'...I could go on and on

And as I've said before (another thread), a girl could really fall for Moist von Lipwig, a character introduced in 'Going Postal' and then reappearing in 'Making Money'.

I also love Death (the anthropomorphic personification), and 'Hogfather' is just wonderful to read a Christmastime.

Currently reading old GYO mags, until the weekend when I can get to a bookshop.
I'm looking forward to another good mosey round all the charity shops over the weekend (there are LOADS in Colchester!) to stock up on interesting looking books! It's fast becoming my favourite way to buy books!

Apart from titles and authors I recognise and want to read I always end up buying a few 'wild cards' and have found and read some amazing books that have turned into favourites!

Over the past three months or so I have read and loved the following; all from charity shops and all fro between 50p and £2.50!

The Book Thief - Markus Zusak
The Icarus Girl - Helen Oyeyemi
        Middlesex - Jeffrey Eugenides
        Papillion - Henri Charriere
The Life of Pi - Yann Martel
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time - Mark Haddon
A Thousand Splendid Suns - Khaled Hosseini
Half a Yellow Sun - Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
The Testament of Gideon Mack - James Robertson
The Stars' Tennis Balls - Stephen Fry
Freakonomics - Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner
A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius - Dave Eggers
Don't Sleep There are Snakes - Daniel Everett

Hmmmmm... might not rush out and try and track any of these one's down!

My OH loves the early Pratchett books but I never really got into them when I was younger might have to give them a go!

I've been quite disappointed with the last couple of Patricia Cornwell's books - she seems to have totally lost the plot I really struggled with Scarpetta too.

I think his earlier non-Discworld ones were tricky, 'Strata' is just plain peculiar!

Also, I can't understand those people who can stand in book signing queues and have read the book from beginning to end by the time they get to the front (apologies if any of you are those people), I like to 'do' the voices in my head and build up the picture in my mind. Sometimes i do have to reread paragraphs, usually coz I'm so caught up in it that i miss what he was actually trying to tell me. If a book really captivates me, I can't put it down and will get throught it pretty quickly - but not that quick!!

Hehehe! I have to do exactly the same thing - kinda like zooming out! Can end up focusing too closely on the actual words rather than what's being said, if that makes sense?!

Yes I have that problem with Piers Anthony. I got as far as "Geis of the Gargoyle", and now I don't know what order all the newer ones came along!

A lot of the early Pratchett are based on something familar, and picking one because you are interested in what he is taking the mick out of is a good introduction.
Some are better as 'stand alones' than others. Pyramids works well, Equal Rites, Wyrd Sisters, Small Gods, Guards Guards, Moving Pictures, Reaper Man, are all fairly early on and capable of making sense without having read the previous one. After that most of them do 'follow on' rather.
The first 2 (Colour of Magic and Light Fantastic) make up one story between them.
Flowers come in too many colours to see the world in black-and-white.

I have read those, I really enjoyed them. I need to get the last one. After writing the first two in the trilogy the decided that it should be a four part trilogy.

Vikkib, Papillon by Henri Charriere is one of my 3 top books of all time, and I've read plenty.
The film truly doesnt do the book justice.
I know its an amalgamation of several escape stories, but that book revolutionised the entire French penal system. Within a year of the book going on sale, the French government of the day was shamed into stopping sending criminals to places such as Devils Island. Great book.
