      So to clarify:
You are booting into Windows XP and there is a marked difference in accessing the vine when Outlook isnt running

I am not booting into XP yet - all I have done is create the partition (which is currently empty) ready to take XP, but noticed an improvement before even getting to the loading of XP stage (with OL closed).

Getting XP to load isn't too easy, it keeps trying to access C: which of course it would.

I guess I am just trying all that I can think of to remove the sludge.

And is that still the case that the vine is fast on Vista with Outlook closed

No its the time on the vine server in Germany thats incorrect, that shouldn't cause an issue though.

Can you go to Start > Run > type "Outlook /safe" without the quotes > press Enter, when Outlook opens can you try out the vine (you may need to close and reopen Interent Explorer > is there any difference.

Ps there is a space between Outlook and /safe.
PPS Instead of typing the above you can also hold down the CTRL key and open Outlook

mission carried out - it is sludger with OL open, but again 'we' appear to slowing down without OL
                *swears

It seems to be a load time issue, when I was attempting this reply, each of the reply window icons was loading one by one.

I really do appreciate your help

this may or may not mean anything - but sometimes I notice when opening Vine that it is showing 'old data', as in when I just came back in it was showing you as the last reply - but when I opened Chat my reply was the last one

Can you delete the grapevine cookie in IE, just the vine cookie, to do this launch IE, go to Tools > Internet Options > Click on Settings under Browser History > View Files > click on the column heading titled Internet Address (this will sort this column) > search this column for a line that reads similar to this:
                    Cookie:yournamemaybe@growfruitandveg.co.uk/

Note before the @ maybe your Vista login name

highlight this file and delete, please note this will wipe out your vine login so you need to know this before you delete > close the browser and test the vine

TEB - how odd is this! there is no reference to Vine in there at all, not once in any shape or form and there is plenty other stuff in there

NG - I'm on IE, I have (previously) tried Firefox etc, didn't make any difference, sadly

When you log into the vine do you have it set to remember you

Duel booting Vista /XP with a preinstalled Vista is not fun as when you install XP it will overwrite the Vista Bootloader.

Before you start thinking its the Vine server you need to run ping plotter and see what the responce tme is also investigate the Up and down speeds on your ADSL.

Then there is the amount of RAM on your PC and the amount free.

The ping time for the vine is excessive but that is the only site Piskie has issue with

This may be crazy but if i was in your position Piskie i would run 2 computors with vista on 1 and XP on tother with both computors running through one monitor through a change over switch .
As i said this may be crazy but it should work i aint a techno just watch when i take my computor to the doctors that is what he do's and it all gets sorted out....jacob
