I lost a fish

I have fish in my water butts (to eat the mozzie larvae & because I like fish).

They have survived nearly five years now.
Last week I bought 2 extra little ones. Today I only have one little one.

The rain was so hard last night that the water butt overflow has failed, and the water has spilled over the rim (I think the overflow pipe is blocked .. I think I know what's blocking it).

I flushed the overflow pipe through, by unscrewing the diverter and lowering it for a minute.

I think the heavy rain has knocked something out of kilter, because it now seems to be at the wrong angle and I can't get the water to flow properly out of the overflow pipe.

I've never before had both butts fill up overnight, so this is the first time the problem has arisen.

No, just a water butt and a couple of goldfish. It's so deep that it doesn't freeze in winter, and because it's constantly fed with rainwater, the water stays clear and clean.
Obviously take care when you are dipping your can for watering

In Spain many rural houses rely on rainwater for general use (mostly they buy drinking water, or drink wine). The usual 'mosquito control' for such set-ups is an eel (or several).

It is 10 days since I lost that fish ... you can only imagine my surprise when he reappeared today!

I can only guess he got stuck in the pipe. After 10 days he lost enough wait to fall back out of it ...?

What a great idea, fish in my water butts.

I have 5 placed at different points around the lottie, to make life easier for me when watering. But I fill them up from a hose, will the fish be ok with this?

I keep my butts covered, just the cut off makeshift lid to stop them the water going green. Is this ok for the fish, or would I need to have them uncovered?

Love the idea of going to see my goldfish as well as how the fruit and veg are getting on. Especially as I hardly ever get to see the frogs in my pond.
