The Party is over. I have now officially called it quits, although all the veggies are planted (except the leeks which are started but not finished), and the rent is paid til February.
I hope to secure 4 paid days a week working between the estate garden and the posh walled garden, leaving the Fridays free for delivering veg boxes to the remaining customers. I will continue to supply veg boxes although there will no longer be any extras bought in, such as organic eggs, fruit and cheese but once my veggies run out, that'll be it.
I will also attend two Farmers Markets each month.
Have spoken to my landlord and he is happy for me to keep as much or as little of the 5 acres that I want, so I'm keeping about an acre, including the shed and polytunnel - I will be growing young veg plants for a local Garden Centre next Spring, and growing for myself, my family and the hotel, with possibly surplus for the Farmers Market.
The veggies that are in will have to cope on their own - at least we have a decent amount of rain today - first in god knows how long.
Things will be real tight for a while - gotta speak to my creditors on Monday to make arrangements for repaying them - not looking forward to that one.
However, having made the decision, I feel that great weight has been lifted ffom my shoulders and hey - I'll still be self employed but will have lots more time to spend with my wife and kids - something I am accutely aware has been lacking for this last while.
I loved doing it, and am genuinely upset that it didn't work out, but you just get the head down and get on with life.

Oh, no, Ratty. I'm so sorry. It's good that you made a sensible decision before the situation became very bad, that took courage, lots of people plod on hoping it will somehow work out in the end - it rarely does - I hope your new plans come to fruition and you enjoy your time with your family, those are times you can't get back later.

Really sorry to hear that it's not worked out but at least you tried. Keep your priorities right and you'll be OK.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I'm so very sorry to hear of this.

At least you retain an option on some land with possibly expansion if the upturn gets too good to look away - and hats off to an understanding landlord here.

You've not given up completely and will have things ticking over for at least your own use and a down-sized operation to a reduced clientele - you never know they may be able to spread the word and build up again in the months to come? Perhaps you could look into a 'premium' market of speciality via your garden centre contacts?

There have been so many factors against any small businesses over the last few years and those that try, and give it their best shot, are not the ones receiving the engorged bonuses.

But one thing that banks, finance and a few hard knocks can't take away from you is your wonderful family and the friends you've made along the way - I hope you count the good folks here in that number - I certainly do you.

Best of luck Rat and may your 'vermin' prosper (I mean that in the best possible way!) and I wish you much (virtual) gold pressed latinum as my little hand can pass on all the way from Ferenginar!

Don't really know what else I can say - but - Take Care of those who really matter.

Glad you have made the decision, I'm sure it is quite liberating.

So sorry to hear your news. It must have been a heartbreaking decision to make. On the plus side, as you say, you will be able to spend more time with your family, which is a good thing. Just wish we could've done something to help. You must have made the right decision - when you said you feel like youve had a weight lifted off your shoulders, then you have done the right thing. Wishing you and your family all the best for the future - do keep in touch.
