  • A sad, sad day

    Hi All,

Regulars amongst you will remember that a month ago I was given notice to cease growing veg on a tree belt at the end of my garden - see the pictures for a before and after....
I was making enquiries about buying it from the owner - a company which maintains green bits after property developers have gone from a housing estate. Unfortunately I have had to abandon this plan and as of Sept.10th th area has to be cleared, a sad day after three years of hard work and lots of enjoyment.
Following a discussion with the Planning Office at West Lindsey Council I am told that even if I purchased it it would have to remain as a natural tree belt (natural meaning riddled with horsetail and bindweed) - I cannot have raised beds, grow veg., keep my rasp. canes., and not even turf it to make a play area for my children. As such I would be paying money to look at a load of weeds with the added pleasure of knowing that they were now my responsibility!!
When I pointed out the many benefits of GYO I was told that I should get an allotment if I wished to continue with my passion. Planning regulations are a nonsense and I now have to demolish all my hard work...

Have you contacted your local paper, Andrew. Get this in the public domain, for goodness sake.

Thats a real shame. I'd agree with contacting the local paper. Living in the area myself, I'd be amazed if you have any real success taking on West Lindsey council but you never know. At the very least, it would make people aware of the daftness of it all!
I was feeling part of the scenery
I walked right out of the machinery
My heart going boom boom boom

I've come to take you home."

          That's terrible!

Definately get hold of the Local Press, T.V and Radio Stations.....GYO is what everyone is being enouraged to do, surely with enough support and noise they'll have to back down.

Go for it and best of luck.

Good point, the BBC have got a massive "Dig In" promotion going on at the moment all about growing your own. Would be good to highlight how uncooperative your council are in aiding this scheme.

Can't you plant it with fruit trees? If they say it has to have trees that is.

Andrew could you contact Hugh Fairly Interesting at River Cottage, he's really promoting land share, GYO and planting veg on spare ground. Worth a try I would think. I'm also with everyone else, go very public and good luck.

                  Thanks All,
I do plan to go public now since I've got nothing to lose. The landowner has verbally agreed that I can have two fruit trees.

That;s what I was thinking of suggesting. The law/council is an ass.
So plant some apple or nut trees, and deny all knowledge of them (they'll probably tell you to buy a license before you can have the windfalls)

When you think that there is a world food shortage, and 'grow your own' is being actively encouraged by Government, I would have thought you have a very strong case here.

Go to the press, and if it gets published online, post us the link - we fought hard to get Tricky his plot back, I'm sure we'll all lend our support to you too.

I'm with Florence - go to Hugh Fearlessly-Eatsitall. Get a 'celeb' on your side, and the local paper and radio station.
