          Thought I'd just dredge this thread up, so I've got 2 pages of encouragement from you lovely people to keep me going...

          The course starts in 1 week

          I know I've been a bit quiet the last couple of weeks, but I've been trying to cram in as much lottie and housework as possible before I start, plus getting to grips with the course books and website. It's been manic! Still haven't achieved the show-home look I was aiming for... or the pristine allotment, but heigh ho, I might achieve miracles in the next 7 days...

          I'm planning to do as much work as possible between 1pm & 3pm, so if you see me on here between those times, please tell me to 'GET ON WITH IT!'

          The first assignment I have to do is about Cleopatra (passage taken from Plutarch) for the first part and Cèzanne (art ) in the second part. If anybody is familiar with either of those things, I'd love some input!

            Crikey - can't believe I missed this thread, and no mention on Bookface either (that I noticed, which doesn't say much).

            Good on ya missus - I'd love to be able to study, especially something that interested me, but I'm rubbish at studying, and am in complete awe of anyone that can - especially "mature students" who have to fit studying in around their busy lives.

            I know very little about Cezanne I'm afraid, I did study art for 2 years, but Cezanne wasn't one of the impressioninsts/post impressionists/ cubists that I was particularly keen on.

              Hints from someone struggling with a masters at the moment. 1) Some of your best ideas will come when you have shut yourself away for an hour or so in a really dull place (i book a 'meeting room' at work if I can) with no distractions but a blank piece of paper and some relevant reading. 2) if you are looking to some new ideas from other parts of the world it may help to eat the food, listen to the music, watch a movie and then read the text. 3) the more risky connections you make the more marks you get. 4) mindmapping your essay always pays off.
              Best of luck - but it is really clear you won't need it !!!

                I know the feeling Wayne, I'm not very keen on his paintings either

                Thanks Jeannie If I'm honest, finding the discipline to do the work is as scary as the work itself!

                  Ha! but that's it! The discipline is all it is about - and if you can do it - and you already know you can - you get the glittering prizes! How would I tackle Cezanne and traditional still life? Well - the obvious answer would be read up a bit on each. The wacky answer would be to print off similar examples of each from g**gle image and draw all over them with a ruler - then you can compare foreground, middle ground and background, composition and layout - then look at them with half closed eyes for similarities and differences in colour, density, light and dark, then possibly look for their position in history - were they both seen as rebels and outrageous in their time - again compare and contrast.Sorry - I could go one for ever but there you go! that's me

                      Much more bland than that one Wayne, a drab blue background, a jug on the left and 4 or 5 apples or pears across the table, not grouped. It won't be difficult to find differences The trouble will be the language of techniques etc which I have to learn, and trying to fit it into/bulk it out to 500 words

                      Jeanie, apparently Cezanne was the rebel against the accepted/'salon' way of painting - I have a whole chunk of stuff to read about it before the assignment is due, thankfully!

                          You'll be fine Sarzwix. 500 words is nothing - about a page.
                          Nobody on thay course knows any more than you do
                          Look at the pictures, read the course material, and write what you think.
                          You're not being asked for a dissertation - just 500 words.
                          You don't have to get a distinction - just a pass.
                          Go for it and I'm sure you will surprise yourself.
                          You can do it. No probs.

                              Sarz, you'll be struggling to hack it down to 500 words, not how to fill a side of A4.

                              I cant draw a straight line with a ruler so I'm afraid post impressionist art isnt really my remit.
                              Now, if you'd done history ......

                                I did half an OU degree (3 credits) but then decided - was able to commit to - being a full time student. My OU credits gave me the entrance requirement I needed for university (I left school when I was 15 with nothing - long, horrible story) and I went on to get a first class honours degree in Psychology.
                                Me too Sara, I had three kids, shift work, married, whole thing, had 6 credits back when you needed 8 for a degree, cashed them in, full time at LSE (credits exempted me first year of course). ended up with a BSc from LSE (marriage broke up whilst I was there, diagnosed with leukaemia), a BA from OU, an MSC from LSE and a PhD - and I left school with no qualifications at all.

                                Go for it girl, you'll regret it if you dont!
