Goodbye Henry

Hi Guys

Feeling low.. found my 20 year old Thoroughbred dead in the field this morning, looks like he died bad, probably a heart attack.

He was a miserable old bugger, wouldn't let anyone catch him (except me) in the field, came last in 2 races as a two year old, brilliant potential as a showjumper, nearly died as a 5 year old after mullering a fetlock under a stable door. Retired when recovered and became a brilliant nanny to two home bred foals teaching the meaning of manners.

Spent his later years trying to convince me he should be treated as the racehorse he should have been and acted like a two year old when bringing him in to his stable during winter.

How very sad. Sounds like Henry didn't go out without a struggle though (not his choice to leave you if you see what I mean)

He had a good twenty years with you so take heart. Platitudes don't really help at this time, I know.

Tis always a bit of a relief though when you've not had to decide to have a horse put down.

That's really sad Hayley, he sounds as though he made the most of his life with you though, you were lucky to find each other.

Ahh Bless Hayley! (((( HUGS)))) for you. I hope you feel better about it soon! At least he is at peace now and won't have to worrie about being cought by anyone. He has his true freedom now! Remember he will still be with you in your heart!

I have to agree, I'm in the process of organising to have one of my ponies put down and I am finding it really traumatic even though he is 39 and has a list of ailments as long as your arm. I can really sympathise with you as I am totally distraught now even thinking about it and will be gutted when i finally lose him, but i feel i can take comfort in the fact that I have known and looked after him for the last 19 years and you can do the same. It sounds like Henry was well looked after and loved by you and had a great life. I know none of this makes it any easier and the shock of finding him like that must have been awful. (((((big hugs ))))) If its any consolation my pony Billy has a grade 4 heart murmer ( grade 5 is dead I'm told by the vet) and she ( the vet) says that they are not like people when having a heart attack they know nothing about it, the body releases some chemical that means they are not aware of whats happening to them and they dont suffer. Sorry I'm rambling - I hope your ok, my thoughts are with you and Henry today (((((hugs)))))) RIP Henry.xxx

Thanks guys, was a severe shock, I'm about cried out and have a hellish headache now.

He didn't just drop unfortunately and it must have happened some time between 6.30am & 8.30am (mate with horses next door to the field said he was up and about when they were in their yard).

He's gone to be cremated and then come home to be buried next to Bo an old friend.

I always thought Islay would be next she's 26 and started to look it the last few months
