In the 1500's wealthy people had plates made of pewter. Food with high acid content caused some of the lead to leach onto the food, causing lead poisoning death. This happened most often with tomatoes, so for the next 400 years or so, tomatoes were considered poisonous.

mmm...but there's some confusion as to what the word actually refers to, as tomatoes were referred to as xitomatl, and tomatillos at miltomatl, but europeans shortened both names to tomatl.

or so I read earlier in the week when I was looking for recipes.
