I text Paul (No. 2, in age, son) to say 'birthday ideas for Scott please', 5 mins later a text from Scott, 'Mom*, please don't feel compelled to buy me anything, I stopped getting presents long ago'

So No. 2 son dobbed me in

So, should I buy him something or just cook his favourite food, which turns out to be Red Snapper

If you want to get him something then do so, even if its only a gift voucher or money towards something you know he really wants. You can say as a mum its a privilage to buy something, my sons would think there was something wrong if I didnt get them anything lol.

It sounds like he is a 'grown up' son. Do you generally send him something?
Seeing as he is with you for 5 days, how about cooking him his favourite food one night, taking him to your favourite restaurant on one night, or having a day out together (doesn't have to be a big expense) and giving him a little something maybe that you can make. (Thinking of a jam, chutney, knitted scarf, etc) to take away with him.

Ok... start from the known. You know he likes red snapper, so you can probably assume he likes fish generally.

There is obviously some story about Scott, none of my business, but can I guess that he is generally the independent type? In which case he can probably cook for himself.

To be honest, I would go with the dinner and take him out and listen to see if there is anything he fancies (that's what I do for ours).

Madmax grew up away from home (boarding school) and his mum always asks me what he wants for birthdays and crimbo so don't feel alone in not knowing what your son's like
