  • Just seen ideal job....argh!!

Have just seen that the little delicatessen in our village is up for sale

Would love to have a little deli/cheese shop etc! Only a mile away from home - walkable along the beach footpath I add!

Am so tempted to ring up and ask for further details, but it is very naughty of me to think so, as we're not in the best financial position in the world. Price is fairly reasonable I think... darn it!!!

Argh - wish I'd never seen the sign etc now!

Oh go for it. A little info will do no harm.

On the other hand - I suppose if you don nothing you can continue to dream.

We are at the seaside but lots of shops are closing down through lack of business. I too would like a multi deli/coffee/gifts/flower shop.

You never know- might bring in more money than you are doing now!
No harm in talking to the owners..and a little chat with the bank...you may always regret not at least looking into it!

      No harm......

I suppose getting the info will do nothing, and may put me off! Ha!

We're not too bad up here, mainly cos there are a lot of residential-type caravan parks, with repeat offenders... sorry, visitors; plus a large local population and no supermarket...

        Oh dear, I hate dilemmas!

Could be a lot of hard work! You have to keep the shop open and manned as well as stocking it, sourcing stock, keeping the books. Not saying don't but think how much it will limit your life.

Go get the info! Doesnt mean you have to do anything with it, but it will be an informed choice

Seems strange to me that its up for sale in what I would imagine some of its busiest period, if it isnt for death, sickness or divorce then I would be very wary, dont know about Deli's but the failure rate on restaurants used to be 18 out of every 20 would go under in the first 2 years.

I keep thinking of the whole - your shop is your life - thing... and tbh, it doesn't bother me as much as it would have a few years ago!

We don't go away from home much anyway (as we need a house sitter for the animals and garden), and are very much 'home-birds'.

My mum ran a business on her own for 10 years, and my sister currently has her own shop, so it's kind of in the family!

It's been open in its present state for about 5 years I think... according to the blurb, the lease is up for renewal, so they could have used this period to get out (as it were)

That would be one of my main questions, along with "last 3 years accounts please!!"

Well good luck and hope it all works out if you decide to give it a go.

PS How much do you want to bet that the accounts they show you are vastly different from the ones they submit to the MIB

Hahaha.... when my sister bought her business, it was SO obvious that the accounts had been 'doctored' to make it look super-fab, that we laughed in the estate agents face, and requested the 'real' set

My mate looked at buying a shop. It was next to the Tube, buy a Bus stop...between 2 schools.

We sat outside for a week and watched the trade. When he looked at the books it took anout £3 per week. The Seller was totally honest that if it was kids or people in a hurry it went in a pot under the counter. If the buyer had a suit on on lingered in the shop it went in the till.

I would want the new lease to be signed before I took it on....

We are fairly lucky cos we know the area well, but I'd definitely need to do more research...

It's on a busy village high street (the only street!) and there is a Co-op, but no other supermarket. The Co-op sells basics, but that's it. There is still a thriving butcher, baker, greengrocer and fishmongers shop on the same street.

We often buy stuff from the deli - it does slightly more 'exotic' ingredients like capers, sun-dried tomatoes, as well as locally made cheeses, and pies. It also does tinned/jarred stuff and quite a bit of gluten-free food as well. They do sandwiches and hot chickens at lunchtime; and always seem busy on a Saturday when we go - queues out of the door etc....

Hhhmmmm, one to ponder on I think....

I do love Deli's, the one in town is lovely but very expensive but the only place to go if you want the more unusual produce or combinations, noticed when I was in there last weekend buying my doctor precribed Stinking Bishop, that they now have a milk urn but filled with Balsamic Vinegar and you can either bring your own jar or the shop will provide one.
