about 17% of the beet is sugar, the rest is fibre and water.... * sorry will go now ... *
Never test the depth of the water with both feet

The only reason people get lost in thought is because it's unfamiliar territory....

Always remember you're unique, just like everyone else.

I could live with that then. If a SB was the size of a small swede that would give you as much sugar as you could fit in a hens eggshell?

I bet it's a bit of bugger to get it out though!

Extract the juice, evaporate the water & what's left is sugar? It'd be brown sugar though, and at some point what you extract becomes black treacle and golden syrup...

I need an episode of 'Come Outside' with Aunty Mabel & Pippin the dog to explain it (a kids/schools programme that explains how things happen)

British Sugar....Is a very eco friendly company....I wrote an article on it.

Bascally they recycle everything...including the CO2 which they pump into their Tomato greenhouses that are heated by the hot water that is a by product of the sugar making.

There is a big sugar factory not far from us in Bury St Edmunds.

OH was amazed when I told him they grow beet round here to make sugar (we even have a sugar beet club - social club lol). her thought it all came form the carribean!

He ws also amazed to learn that the heat and water from the factories is re-used to grow tomatoes... Brilliant idea!

They're quite a reasonable size, bigger than the average swede - I remember we used to get wagon loads of them going past our house when I was a kid.

Related story - a family friend of ours farmed the stuff (please ignore the evil that is monocultures for a minute ) and was once investigated by the tax man who accused him of selling his produce at the farm gate an not declaring his earnings. It took him ages to convince them that there isn't really a market for sugar beet from the average passer by.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Sainsbury's have recently changed from Tate & Lyle natural cane sugar to Silver Spoon ersatz beet sugar. Shall not be buying any more sugar from Sainsburys.

Chemically, beet sugar may be 'the same as' cane sugar, but I prefer the real thing, and will not buy the ersatz.

I know that we're not going to agree but sugar beet sugar is just as much the real thing as cane sugar.

emmm its like saying that you are only going to buy BP petrol..becausae that comes from Persia and Esso is that American substute.

You can only tell the diferance between sugar obtained from Cane or Beet by a chemical test.

We have been producing Sugar in the UK from Beet since the 1800's. The only reason we use Beet is that Cane will not grow here as it is too cold.

Kirsty B is also close to Bury...that makes at least three of us!

Actually, I hate sugar beet factories ... there's a huge one on our train line, and it chuffing stinks, worse than Comfrey Tea.

There's sugar beet in most of the fields round here. Made me laugh on the bus the other day when an old guy, up from London on holiday, spoke very authoritatively about the 'cabbages' in the field we were passing. I decided not to get involved and let him chunter on to the rest of the bus

If anyone's interested, this is how they make sugar from beets: http://www.sucrose.com/lbeet.html

So, how about home extraction? Or is it that, you can grow it..................... but it's impossible to get the sugar out without building a stinking factory!

All this sugar talk got me checking my bag to see what it said.
I was amazed to read this

                              Silver Spoon Half Spoon Sugar
                              Granulated Sugar with added sweeteners.
