Northern Lights/aurora

Some-where recently the northern lights came up in conversation and I can't remember which thread it was,any way I subscribed to a free watch site who send me an e-mail when activity is high.
www.dcs.lancs.ac.uk/iono/aurorawatch/ is the address they sent the latest alert on.I've not seen any tonight but the digital signal(yes I have to confess I do digital)to our t.v.went haywire for an hour or more,mind it was only the x factor so I'm not too fussed.

Interestingly although we are far too far south for the aurora, I got kicked offline for a bit just now. Any connection I wonder?

According to the web site the lights have been as far south as tyneside and are beeing seen further south each year,seem to be on the coast though , not sunny luggerburruger by the soar(I originate from leicestershire me duck)

You can see Aurora Borealis in loughburough MB cos I've seen it in sunny nunny & we're about 30 miles south of you as the cow flies

But we are in the river valley. I'd have to go up the Beacon if we wanted to see it, then I'd get a good view of all the lights of Derby/Nottingham and Leicester which block everything out.
Was grateful to see the eclipse though!

Many, many years ago when I was a Little girl (about 10 years old I think) I remember my Dad waking me up to look out of the window in the middle of the night to look at the lights in the sky. I can still clearly remember what they looked like - it was definitely the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) and it was breathtakingly beautiful.

We lived in South Devon, right on the edge of Dartmoor, and it must have been around 1961 - 1963

I saw the northern lights when I lived in Dorset about 5 years ago! Mind you, we had to travel some way out of the town to get out of the range of the street lights. Apparently some lass who was workin on the Scilly Isles at the time phoned her boyfriend who was one of my housemates, to tell him she could see them and that's how we knew!

We get fantastic showings here, but this year it hasn't been cold enough yet. One night about four years ago, we had a good 4 hour showing. My brother and SIL were here and we just set up chairs outside, dressed up warm, got a glass of wine (didn't need to be chilled) and just watched. Greens, yellows, reds, whites all flashing spectacularly across the sky. The epicentre seemed to be above our house.

I'll post a pic if we get any good nights.

I have signed up too..never seen them, and even if they are above our cloudy skies, I would be chuffed to know about it!
I walked on the sea in Blackpool ( frozen of course!!) in 1961 so I wonder if the lights were anything to do with the extra cold weather??
