  • I made jam!

I had such a 'homely' weekend! Started off on Saturday by making a lot of plum jam. My first time, so a couple of lessons learned (like there is never a saucepan big enough...), but I am now the proud owner of many full jam jars, some of which will be given to new homes as pressies!

I then Spring cleaned the house. Well, ok, tis summer, but I had a dinner party that night and the attendees live in a sterile house (she doesn't work, so has time for that cleaning malarky!). Woo, was I knackered! I then went shopping to get bits, made a plum crumble and prepared the curry for that evening, with all home-grown veg in it, plus giant puffball as the mushroom ingredient. Dinner party went swimmingly and the curry was served with my green tomato chutney, made the week before!

Then, yesterday I did some more harvesting and prepared a mixed veg risotto, which includes LOTS of the puffball. Sooooo yummy and I have some today for lunch, complete with freshly shaved parmesan on top.

Tis a shame I have to work for a living!

Well done on the jam and the housework!! Very satisfying isn't it (the jam-making that is). I hate housework and tend to put it off as long as possible, but when I do a blitz I definitely feel virtuous after the hard slog

I made Two_Sheds recipe for cucumber and green tomato relish, some bramble jelly (have a HUGEEEEE hedge of brambles in the common in front of house) and made dinners for the week, big pot of chilli and our new favorite orzotto.

We're not so good on the house front, tried to finish prepping one of the bedrooms to paint but kept getting distracted.

It has been such a good year for the Plums and Damsons that we are dealing again.

One phone call to the WI and we have old ladies turning up at all hours with plastic bags..to grab them.
My phone has more Processing power than the Computers NASA used to fake the Moon Landings

If you found a giant puffball, one good recipe is to cook 'steaks' of puffball, seasoned with black pepper, crushed garlic and olive oil. Grill gently (it doesn't take long). A great way to be inconspicuously vegetarian when all about are eating steak or chicken-breast...
Another option is to make 'fritters' with the big slices. You need to make a nice thick batter (one including eggs) with wholemeal flour, and add as much herbiness as you can manage (a couple of teaspoonfuls of dried mixed herbs to a 1 egg and half-a-pint of milk batter, worked for me. Can't remember how much flour it took to get the thickness). Coat the slices of mushroom in the batter and fry, either in the chip pan or in deepish oil in a frying pan. Drain thoroughly on paper towel. Almost a meal on its own!
I actually invented this when we were hard up, but had enormous Parasol Mushrooms, or puffballs, etc. It's filling, and with a few veg added makes a satisfying meal.
Flowers come in too many colours to see the world in black-and-white.
