  • Who runs the oldest/newest computer?

My computer is a 'Bitza' ...bitza this and bitza that! Its a bit like triggers broom in Only Fools and Horses.

I am quite attached to the old girl and am really quite proud that she can still perform. No modern computers are future proof, and the new fangled software they bring out means you are supposed to change your puter regularily to be able to run the memory and speed reliant software.

My son has a newish computer in his bedroom, but mine is a bit of an antique in computer terms, but I wouldn't have it any other way. OH thought she was taking pity on me by offering to get me a new computer for Crimbo. After mulling over her suggestion for all of 30 seconds, I decided to decline her kind offer.

My puter has been with me for ten years now, its had umpteen ram upgrades (and downgrades when I donated some to my Sons old puter) just got that ram back this week as his new one has plenty.
Its had three hard drives,(might piggy back his old one to increase capacity when I get some time) three CD roms and god knows what else just to keep it plodding along.

The screen is the size of a double decker bus ( went from 13" to 15" to 17" over 10 years) and i've worked my way through about six mice and three keyboards! I am now connected to the net by a broadband router but the old dial up modem is still in and I am networked to my Sons puter.

    Its present spec is:-

    Pentium 667 Mhz chip
    250 Meg Ram
    40 Gig hard drive
    CD RW drive
    CD rom drive
    Floppy drive (never used)
2 X Cat 1 USB ports at back
17" Monitor (size of a bus)
Use 1Gig Memory stick and Camera on USB's

Going to try and squeeze a DVD RW in soon but don't know whether processor will handle it?

What I would love to know is, what is the smallest/oldest usable computer on the vine?, as I want one!!!

I don't know the answer to all your questions Snadger as I'm not all that technical. I have 2 computers and feel a bit guilty about it. I have a desk top, running XP (that's all I can tell you in technical terms) that my daughters partner built for me to do what I wanted it to do, and this lap top (Dell something or other) which I love. It's Wi Fi and I can use it anywhere in the house or garden. Both are Broadband and that's important to me.
I'm sure it's all a bit wasteful, but I console myself by saying we put up with all the disadvantages of the 21st century, so we should take advantage of all the benefits - and that includes totally up to date computers and communication systems. I think we have to, or one day we will waken up to discover we just don't understand the technology of the world we live in. I intend to be bang up to date to the last minute !!!!!

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

All I know is, my current PC is my brother in laws ex-pc - he's my PC guru and anything I need doing he can do it (if hes in the mood). He can even move my mouse on the screen and he lives 3 miles away! Shame he cant sort out my photos for the Vine! LOL! Dexterdog

this is my second laptop, had a note book for years and upgraded as much as was possible but it had a black and white screen and was really heavy, donated it to youth group to mess around on. had this one five or six years and it can no longer be upgraded, its still coping but only just, really need a desk top theese days as dont dont travel continuously like i used too.bob got his laptop about three years ago, its much faster and has loads more memory but still hasnt managed to keep up with us and has cost us a small fortune in repairs.
then we have my work laptop, it cant be used for anything but work and they moniter it all the time.
we have limited space as the house is still an ongoing project but a desk top would suit us better. as it is the three laters of pcs get moved to the sofa while i'm working on another.

I just switch on and use it - the technical side is beyond me!

We currently have 1 working puter, which is a HP jobbie, 1GHz speed, 200MB Ram, DVD rewrite, etc, it was new 12 months ago and is lovely, brought as a replacement for my old 666Mhz Pentium 2 that died the week before my interview for Store Manager, so had to get a new one ASAP!

We've still got my old one, waiting for Lee to get around to taking my HD out and trying to fit it and the processor into his old 233Mhz puter that is poorly! Once we've managed to get his up and running then they will be networked together so we can both be online at the same time! (As they used to be)

I remember I started with an Amstrad thingy then a 386 (which was aparrently all they had to send someone to the moon with at the time!) then graduated to a 486 then a Pentium 70 (£1500 at leccy board, which was a hell of a lot then and now!) then a pentium 100, then P266 then the one I have now!( which has some of the parts from the 266).Old but usable!

OH likes a few antiques in the house and I like my old antique puter!

OOh does that mean Mr D will be able to get online a bit more then? Will be good to "see" you both.

Well, Being a bit of a techy (Grins), I guess I would have a new computer - Last month I bought a Dual Core Intel VIIV 3.2 GHz Thingy which basically means it's running 2x 3.2Ghz Processors - That's 6.4GHz of processing power!

It's got 1.5Gb of Ram - 19in Flat LCD Screen to boot

Very good! No idea what you're talking about though! Does it make the tea as well?

I've found they stop working if you boot them too often Not sure what mine are. This is a HP NC6220 laptop but the one at home is a Fugitsu thingy.
