  • Winter Solstice today!

Found an interesting site explaining what the Winter Solstice means to many religions!

The only thing of interest to me is that the days are finally going to start to stretch rather than shrink and in my eyes thats worth a celebration

I'm with you Piglet. I celebrate Christmas' roots in Christianity but although I know there is sufficient evidence to doubt that Jesus was born on December 25th (and he certainly wasn't a white child and there wasn't any snow despite what scenes you may find on some Christmas Cards ) it's important to me to celebrate his birth sometime during the year.

Likewise Birdie wife, I wish it could be moved to the spring which is apparently nearer to the true date of Christs birth and then all the consumer nonsence could be separated off. As a Christian (yes one or two of us exist) I place more credence in Easter than Christmas. However Christmas seems to be more of a family get together time which can only be a good thing in an age where Mankind has time for nothing. In addition a winter break can only be good for the soul.

              Happy yule to you all!

Apparently the solstice is actually (technically speaking) tomorrow (22nd) . I'm off to the Rollright Stones in the morning to see if there are any druids doing their thing and drink a cheer with some elderflower cordial made on the summer solstice. Have been to the Avebury circle a few times for winter but its a long way away since I moved house!

On summer solstice at Avebury a couple of years there was a mass wedding of druids at dawn. Dawn is *very* early on the longest day, but it was well worth getting up for!

Enjoy whichever winter festival you choose to believe in.

              Ian.

Come to think of it, there was a beautiful red sky this morning which bathed the fields all around in a warm glow!

Been a glorious day here - well the 5 hours of daylight!
Looking forward to the days drawing out now - its go to work in the dark and get home in the dark at the moment unfortunately.

And now it's the countdown to summer - hooray!

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Also some interfering git fiddled with the calender so it may well have been 25th of december but it might have been in the summer
