  • Am I being picky re my new summerhouse?

Our summerhouse was delivered and assembled yesterday. The roof is not seated correctly on the front wall and so is higher by 3/4 of an inch at one end on the front. Am I being picky?

There are other things as well... but I'm just curious to know whether it is just a case of me being extra picky.

I think you should be picky, even extra picky. We Brits have a reputation for rolling over when it comes to complaints because we're scared of stirring up trouble. If I'd just bought a summerhouse I'd want it to be just right.

Conclusion: No, I don't think you're being extra picky. Pick away.

Absolutely! You've paid good money for it, so it should be right. Make a list then ring them and ask them when they are coming back to sort it.

I'd get back onto them as soon as possible because if its annoying you after one day think how you're going to feel about their mistakes this time next year.

You know if you leave it it will drive you mad! Be picky and perhaps even ask for some compensation for the inconvenience caused. They should be putting it up right in the first place, I dare say it wasn't cheap!

No, make sure they fix it NOW.
We had the same problem, did'nt do anything about it and ended with problems that cost us to have repaired.
                Do it now.

                    Shoddy Workmanship....

...that sounds like a lovely gap for the wind to get a grip of, and in very bad windy weather it'll take the roof off, or let water in to damage the frame or the contents which, possibly, wouldn't be covered by insurance if an assessor saw that gap.

Do complain for your own peace of mind and hopefully that of future summerhouse buyers too.

I would complain too, we've had so much trouble with shoddy workmanship on our self-build that we are undoing an awful lot of the plumber and sparks' work at our own cost. You've paid for a service not a botch job my dear.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I rang this morning and spoke to a gentleman who I understand to be one of the owners. I am to email over pics of the problems so they can come prepared.

Do you know .. I cannot remember one word resembling anything like 'I'm sorry to hear that..' or "I'm sorry they forgot to bring along the corner finishing pieces", so, although they may be regarded as a good or reliable company I think their customer service leaves a touch to be desired. I work in a customer service environment and I would be a lot more amenable to suggestions if I heard a sorry or a regret.

Also I was trying to explain what the issues were and he kept butting in. I am on a very tight time table at work as our break times are not flexible and they are not extendible so I was keen to get across all information.)

As I said there were other issues - all mostly niggly really but the roof not being on straight (there is no gap at the moment - just the bottom of the roof panel is higher one end) does not seem to be too much to ask.

Anyway, once again, many thanks for the input.

Send an email to them as well Littlemouse, attach your photos and tick the box in 'Options' that says 'request read receipt'. Bullet point all your snags, however little they may seem and don't apologies for complaining. Best of luck with it.

Well, I stil haven't heard diddly re a date for coming to sort the roof and the other 'niggles'. I did email with a list of the things I was not happy about. I took pictures but could not attach them all due to message size- so only attached the most critical ones.

I am thinking of printing a t-shirt with 'I am not a happy customer of (name to be inserted here) - do ask me why!' and then going to the garden centre on a Saturday or Sunday browsing and buying bits and pieces. We bought the summerhouse from a company based on the premises -not from the garden centre itself.

I say I am 'thinking' of doing this but if I get riled enough by inaction on the part of the supplier I will do it.

Anyway, just venting my frustration... let's see what tomorrow holds.

I would make out a report of everything, all the snags, dates, emails etc and send it to the head office of the garden centre as well as watchdog and trading standards, local paper etc.

Surely these guys will not welcome such bad publicity and they may even lose their pitch.
