I know it sounds twee and you might poo poo it but volunteering keeps your hand in, means free courses and you know what? some are quite interesting! you can spend so many hours a week on courses and still get benefits, you may need to be economical with the truth down the job centre though. I know an IT person isnt ideal for environmental stuff but take a good look at your local Wildlife trust website, its packed with free training that gets you out there, doing practical stuff, and qualifications too!
Sure beats daytime TV and does actually give you a reason to get out of bed.

Hang in there, one day soon it will all be behind you and you will find a great job. Been there so many times, bought the t shirt and trust me mate, I feel for you

A development in the job area:

I've been offered a position as an IT Trainer for the NHS on a 6 month contact. It's not permanent, but it's a good foot in the door.
The sad thing is: I was also offered a place at a selection day as a Customer Service Trainer for Comet, this would be a permanent position, pay more, be less travelling and a more enjoyable type of training, however, both jobs were through the same agency. This meant that if I went to the Comet interview, the NHS people would be informed and were not prepared to offer me the job. So I was forced to make a choice. Since the Comet role wasn't guaranteed, I've accepted the NHS job.

I had to decide this yesterday and I start tomorrow!

It's going to be a bit of a pain to arrange collection for my son from nursery as I was able to leave my last job and get to the nursery on time that will not be an option with the new place because of the travel. I will also not be able to drop him off again as the travel is a lot longer than before so I will have to leave earlier.

My wife is going to have to do both now.

We will see how it pans out but it's not an ideal situation as I am now going to be seeing less of my son during the week as I will leave not long after her gets up in the morning and get home just as he is going to bed in the evenings.

But we have to take the rough with the smooth and hope it all works out OK.

You've got a job! If you want to keep looking for a better one, that is an option, but better to do it when working than while unemployed (I would give it aat least a couple of months before trying for something better, preferably 6 months, but each to their own choice).

I used to earn 25k a year as a chef but now work for �6 per hour. It got to the point where I couldn't take the pressure or the physical aspect of the job, so had to look for alternatives. I managed to get a job working 10hrs a week as a gardener, It is still very physical but because there is no deadlines I can take a break as required. The bloke I garden for has a courier business and he also gives me jobs washing vans and doing some driving, and I usually end up doing over 30hrs per week so all in all it has worked out for me even if the work and pay is cr**. Only 18mnths to go to OAP pension.

I was made redundant in march(14 years in a plumbers merchant) but because i have no qualifications i can't seem to get anything,if you look at my photo page this is what i want to do but because of the credit crunch no one has the money to buy such things,here's hoping it gets better soon,cheers kev.

Been offered work recycling pallets,(self employed) so as from monday i am going to give it a try along with the items in my photo album,hoping for some good luck for a change,cheers kev.
