  • Petition to the Admin's

In light of the situation that occurred this week with the glitch that left everyone posting as Olivier, I feel that the Moderators should have greater control over what happens on the vine. This should include the ability to suspend the vine under extreme circumstances (this week being an example).

Interesting idea RT - but what do our star moderators say? Do they want to have more control?
I must say I had the best laugh when everything went belly up and we all turned into Olivier - other Grapes' comments were brilliant!
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

I think our dear mods should at least have an emergency contact number available to them so they can get hold of admin whatever time or day it is. It seems rather tough that they have to handle these things with no back up!

No disrespect to anyone but this isn't a forum where you have to pay a subscription so why would you expect 24 hour service from not only the back room staff but the mods who already do a sterling job. And dont forget that domestic desktop computers dont hold a light to the complexities of a server be it web or otherwise and you couldn't expect a mod to make a decision to say restart a service or apply a patch to a server.

i dont expect 24 hour service, but this forum means a lot to some people and most of us are friends on here, if something goes wrong, why see it go down the pan??? At least if the mods had extra powers, they could stop people hacking in, making mistakes or at least close the Vine until normal service resumes.....the mods do a lot for us and we love em xx

TEB Point taken, but what I'm asking for is the ability to suspend posting not server re-booting, service restarts etc and definitely not patches! I also realise that it is a difficult balance between server admin rights and power user rights etc but surely the ability to suspend posting in extreme situations is not unreasonable?

I'd go for the phone number to call....I don't know what went wrong or what access people had to what as I couldn't see what anyone else could see; but I'd certainly go with a number to call to switch off the Vine until it was sorted.

I think there should be someone who can be contacted in the event of chaos like the other night. Either that or the mods should be trusted with a means of making the vine 'unavailable due to necessary maintenance' for instances where it is totally necessary.

A lot of work was done by volunteers to keep the damage to a minimum.'

An out of hours contact number would be nice But at the risk of sounding like an old fuddy duddy - Let's not make a mountain out of a molehill In all the time I've been a member of the Vine, it going pear-shaped like that has only happened twice or three times (I think, PW might know better than me). Admin do a great job themselves of doing the forum and server updates with very little disruption to us.
If that kind of thing (Olivier! ) was happening every week then I'd be shouting very loudly to have "Switch Off" powers, but although it was a bit of a panic for a while, it was a one-off (touch wood ) and I don't think we need to panic about a repeat of it.
