We had the same problem when we moved into our present house
    The previous people probably took years to build up the accumulation of muck, nicotine and smell, so you're not going to remove it overnight. Things we did were;

Scrub windows , kitchen cupboards and other hard surfaces with strong detergent spray like Flash. Put down newspapers and rags to soak up excess water. It's worth getting a good make of cleaner, not the cheapo discount store or own brand products

Turn off the mains electricity for a day, and dismantle all electrical items as far as you can/dare, like the covers for sockets and switches, light fittings, etc scrub or soak them as above with hot water and detergent, but make sure they are dry before reassembling. Replave all lampshades and bulbs

Take down curtain rails and fittings, treat as above Dump the old curtains or wash on a hot wash

If you can't afford to replace carpets and furniture, then get in a professional cleaner. They do an excellent job, far better than messing about yourself; besides, by the time you've paid for detergent & hire fees, you don't save much anyway They've seen it all before, and will know of other things to do and clean

Have a good look around for blocked ventilators, windows that don't open, that sort of thing We found a window that had been completely panelled in behind a fitted wardrobe! Look for these from the outside as well as inside

A torough spring clean and all - over scrub is better than smellies and air fresheners
Pace yourself, st a target of say one room cleaned and redecorated at a time, but do it well

Reward yourself with regular trips to the pub!

Go to the pet shop and get Simple Solution Stain and Odour Solution. It works a treat!

Thanks for all of the hints and tips. I was out buying biological soap powder and I've friends coming from Glasgow next weekend so they have been begged to bring up some Bamboo Charcoal. I'm going to try Lemongrass oil (when I buy it next week) in my ioniser and I'll also try the stain and odour solution from the pet shop. The only hint I can offer to those in the same predicament is don't use bleach on tiles, use oven cleaner Our bathroom is fully tiled and the pennies will not stretch to replacing the 1970's aquamarine(ish) tiles and yes the grouting was brown from the nicotine (do people smoke in the bathroom?). Hubby and I were talking about getting a dog but I'm not too sure if we want an old smelly one right now On a positive note our flat has never smelt of old people

Ah the smell of dog, I know of one which could cover any smells you already have within 5 mins of letting him in the house - you might not want the smell he leaves but at least it would make a change from fags!

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

That brown stuff in between the tiles probably isn't nicotine - take some wire wool or a metal scourer, pour some lemon juice into a dish and have a tub of bicarb open next to dish. Dip in lemon juice then bicarb and scrub the grout - it will come up much cleaner/whiter and the lemon juice / bicarb mix will act as a natural deodiriser, bleaching agent and antibac agent. Works on ceramic surfaces but test areas 1st to ultra safe.

Time ultimately will get rid of the smell but a helping hand is always good.

50/50 White Vinegar and water in a spray, add a few drops of lemon juice, its fantastic for getting rid of bad odors, cutting thro grease, it's brilliant for cleaning windows, spray it on and rub of with news paper, it stops condensation from building up as fast on them too, best thing is it'll not cost you a fortune.

We have been there as we bought our house from smokers...oh the memory of smells, steaming the wallpaper off and being covered in brown liquid noctoine yuk yuk yuk!!!! We managed to get rid of the smell by redecorating as much as possible and fresh air!!! I bought a second hand car though which was also smoked to death by the prevuous owner.
The only thing that worked with that was an odour neutralising air freshner from Neutrogena - good news was within a week it had gone. They are solid blocks so it might be worth putting a couple in each room.

Good luck ad my thoughts are with you....cigarette smoke yuk yuk yuk!

Don't know if this works but remember the programme with kim and aggie, they used houshold soap to remove tabacco stains from paintwork and ceilings. At one stage she used baby soap as she loved the smell. Sounds like you are doing all the right things.

an electric air purifier really helps remove ciggie odour.
also areca palm, lady palm or parlour palm plants are all supposed to be especially effective for clearing ciggie odour from the air.

Grouting of wall tiles, you might try a steam cleaner. I bought a cheapie one off ebay, and it works miracles on mucky tile grout. It is also likely to shift the smell from almost anywhere (but you may need some clever method to prevent the smell re-settling, because the steamer will just lift it into the air, making the place smell worse for a while, but ultimately removing the source.....)
ANY surface which is not waterproof may have soaked up the pong, including perhaps wooden 'trim' on kitchen cupboard doors? Apply sugar-soap or similar in a concentrated form, then steam....
Flowers come in too many colours to see the world in black-and-white.

I'm banned from using my steam cleaner - steam goes brown from the ciggies/nicotine
