Advice on implants?

Er no, teeth!!

Have a real phobia of dentists, so much so that I live in constant dental pain, but things have to be pretty bad for me to actually visit one.
This morning I popped into downtown Karachi, as the pain was just too much.
The very tall, slim, young and attractive (and single) female dentist (did I just say that out loud?) was very good, giving me some painkillers, and making an appointment Friday for 2 extractions. Doh!!

Problem is, this will leave approximately no teeth left on the top jaw in the back of my head. None. Not 1.
She was telling me that the best treatment possible is implants, where a small screw type affair is inserted into the jaw bone, then 3 months go by, and then 2 teeth per insert can be attached.
I am seriously thinking of having 1 insert done on each side at the back, but would love to know if anyone has had them done, and also, how much they cost. I was told a price that seems ridiculously cheap this morning, but I wont say, just in case people have had them done and paid loads.

Ouch!! I am with you re the fear of dentists, so much so i have to be sedated to have any major works done. I must admit i haven't heard of implants, like you i have had all my back teeth taken out, mixture of a dodgy dentist, blown amalgum fillings and a total fear of the dentists. The upshot is i find it hard to munch anything now so i think having some replacements would be a good idea, the other option is a plate of course which wouldn't involve any screws!
Good luck with that chuck and hope your pain stops soon, there is nothing in the world as bad as dental pain including child birth and i know!

I had my teeth (6) removed on lower jaw 13 years ago (radiotherapy).

I was offered tooth implants, and it was about £15,000 back then.

I did without, not because of the price but because I didn't want any more surgery.

Nothing like having your eyes wedged open and seeing the thing that cuts your lens off coming straight towards you....and the smell of burning 'lens'....as it wafts around the 'theater/office'.

Happy days. Give me a dentist any day, at least now I can see the pretty pictures on the ceiling as they rip out me teeth.

I liked the dentist ... until I had a biopsy on my tongue
The nurse pulled my tongue out, stuck a needle (local anaesthetic) in it, then the nice doctor cut a lump out of my tongue (I could feel the snipping, but with no pain ... weird sensation); then he sewed my tongue up again. I was wide awake, trying to think calming thoughts

Thing is mine just isnt "being scared" of the dentist.
Its a totally irrational, out of proportion phobia. She put a mirror in my mouth this morning, just to have a look, and I was grabbing the seat so tightly it hurt, and I was sweating.
If I have the implants, I would have a general, as far tooooo scared to do that under a local. For the extractions on Friday, I will be having some form of calming gas before they can even do the injection for the anaesthetic. Such a wimp.

She did laugh when she asked what job I did though!!

I'm with you Bob, the pain has to be overwhelming before I go to the Dentist. Implants used to cost an arm and leg but that was about 12 years ago not sure what they are now - still not cheap I imagine.

Take a music player thing and headphones and turn it up REALLY loud then you can't hear what they are doing and saying.

Oh Bobleponge.....I feel awful just reading these posts....I am terrified of the dentist too.
my feelings are trying 'not' to be with you as I fear that I may make you worse......I will beam kind thoughts to you in these stressful times.
