Broken Tv Advice

I have a HD ready Tv, Just out of its Guarentee !!! all of a sudden the picture is now back to front, if you get my drift ! the screen has split in two and the left side of the picture is at the right side, as anyone suffered the same ? is it worth reparing or should i get rid ?

my suggestion is talk to an independent tv repairman as they usually give you a honest answer the big chains will just repair then charge, you could always turn your chair around and invest in a large mirror then the reflection would show the picture the right way round at the fraction of cost of a new TV,

joking aside it boils down to the cost of the TV in the first place
how many years you have had it,
the cost of a similar model now
if it only a year old I would get it repaired, I used to fix crt screens,not flat screens,
if the picture quality is still good i reckon it should be a simple fix.

Thanks for your reply enrich100, it started doing it about 3 days after we had sky + installed, its one of these fancy wall mounted flat screen ones, it was fairly expensive so if it can be repaired that would be great, i just didnt want to get ripped off.

I would check that it is not the sky box that is the problem, can you not disconect the skybox and put the terrestrial ariel/freeview back on to see what sort of picture you get through that, rather than spend lots of money for no reason.

Paulw we tried that daughter has freeview box in her bedroom and i have a normal ariel for the tv in the kitchen, we have had this flipping tv off the wall an plugged in to everything ! and its still the same, i think i will ring a indepedant repair man and see what he says, i have to say i dont think stuff is built to last or be repaired anymore, ive just had to buy a new washer as our 3 year old washer couldnt be repaired..louise xxx

Is the image actually reversed, or like a picture cut in half, and reassembled 'sides to middle'? The latter might be a matter of some tiny control having got out of timing.

And if all else fails, contact your local Trading Standards Department. Just because its 'just out of guarantee' doesn't mean that the supplier has no responsibility.

Apart from which, they will be able to tell you your legal rights.

The fact that the TV is out of its guarantee doesn't matter Louise. A reasonable person would expect a TV to last more than a year so under the Sale of Goods Act the retailer still has a responsibilty. Have a look at the link then speak to the retailer. If you have no success then contact the Citizens Advice Bureau.

Guarantees have been invented to fool you into thinking you aren't covered for faulty goods.

Guarantees are extra to your legal rights. If you can show that the goods were not of satisfactory quality at the time of sale i.e. they were not as durable as it is reasonable to expect, then you may have a claim against the trader or finance company (if applicable) for compensation.

One year is NOT a reasonable life for a TV, no matter what it cost

No, it's not.
So fight for things to last a bit longer ... by complaining when they break down. I do not accept that my TV should only last for a year - I want my money back, thanks.
