  • I'm amongst friends right?

I feel I can share this with you - without too many people laughing.

For years I have suffered with this and I've tried several methods to resolve it - including hypnotherapy.

I'm slightly embarassed to say but I cannot hold my drink.

    Allow me to elaborate.

I can't carry hot drinks, or soups, or trays of foods etc etc. If I'm on my own in the house/room I can probably carry two cups of tea, one in each hand without too much of a problem, though it does take some concentration. If however there are people there (including LadyWayne) I have to carry one at a time - leaving one hand free "just in case" to steady the other.

For years I would only drink bottles at the pub, or other public gatherings as I could not hold a full pint without my hand shaking. Even now, if I buy a round I have to take several trips taking two glasses at a time (even though I could quite easily carry three pints in my hands size-wise). This has got better over time, and I can in most situations have a pint of ale (my preferred tipple).

If people come round for a cup of tea I have to fetch each cup one at a time.

If I make breakfast in bed for LadyWayne I have to take up the toast/cereal/fry up on one trip, then the juices one another, and the tea/coffee on a third.

At networking events/seminars/meetings I always drink bottled water - never tea or coffee.

I can never go and get the tea/coffee here at the office (which I do feel really guilty about). If I have a meeting here I have to get someone else to get the drinks for my guests (which I feel paranoid that people think I'm being self-important about), and never have a drink myself.

If a cup is very full I struggle, I find it easier if there is a "margin for error".

I remember the first day it started happening too.

The ironic thing is, I used to be a cocktail barman.

So, if you see me at Grapestock, and I only have a half full glass - don't top it up for me, it's deliberately like that.

    *breathes out*

I feel better for that, thanks for letting me share.

Tune in tomorrow for "Window on Wayne" and find out what other freaky coditions the big guy has.

I am going to assume that for a change you are being serious.

I also struggle with a tray of drinks so I know what you mean. Don't usually have a problem with one full glass but wouldn't want to have to walk far with it as I always seem to somehow 'wobble' and slosh it over the edge

I don't suppose we are alone.

Indeed - a rare moment of uncharacteristic seriousness.

My brother "shakes" too strangely, so that's three of us.

          Hugs Wayne,
For the last month I have had pins and needles in both arms and it makes carrying drinks very tricky, so I totally empathise with you on that one.
I have had shaky hands/arms for some time but it is now extreme.
I imagine there are a lot more people with this kind of problem than you'd think...

As in you need an overall if I'm drinking anywhere near?

I can't carry a cup of tea without spilling it.... even if I'm just holding one... have invested in a tray for work and even then it takes me twice as long as I have to walk very, very slowly (and still end up with more tea and coffee on the tray than in the cups...)

              You're not alone!

Aw...don't know what to say. Things like that really do impact on your everyday life. During a particularly stressful work period years ago, I developed a fear of eating in front of anyone. If I had a lunch meeting or seminar or something, I couldn't bring myself to eat. It occasionally rears it's head, but not often now. It was very much connected with me thinking other people were judging me on what I was eating - goodness knows why, I never discussed it with anyone. First time I've ever mentioned it actually!

I was always hovering on the fringes of an eating 'thing' anyway and stress would bring it on, so control/stressy work/food all had a relationship I suspect. Never a problem at home, happily *stuffs bread in mouth.*

I know you mentioned people at your work getting redundo - has the atmosphere become more stressy? Do you find it gets worse if you're stressed?

Well, you are a glass-half-full kinda dude, dude.

p.s. so you make cocktails?! Put me down for Grapestock.

If it didn't have your name at the top, Wayne, I'd think I wrote that post. Yup, I used to work in a wine bar and do the usual waitressing stuff and once got fired for not being able to hold a tray properly!

With hot drinks, I have to be really careful, as very occasionally I have a 'mad twitch' and some of it spills onto me, whereupon I end up throwing the lot, due to the resulting reflex. So, like you, I leave a 'margin for error'! Trays are my friend and my coffee mug for work is HUGE, so that I can safely carry it around without fear of throwing it everywhere! I've been laughed at, ridiculed, feared (when I'm carrying hot drinks)...

...seems there are a few of us here with the same affliction, but no-one else has mentioned the mad twitch thing! I wonder if that's me being so anxious when I'm carrying stuff that my muscles are tense and 'ready to fire'.

From what I remember you have a bad back Wayne. My missus also has a bad back and she shakes whilst holding a cup............it's purely down to her medication. If she stops taking the tablets her back pains like hell..........but she stops shaking!

As I'm covering Reception at the moment (for various reasons - redunancies, end of my project, receptionist on maternity leave) I have to make tea/coffee for the MD, Marketing Manager and Financial Director every day, and all the refreshments for meetings (internal and client ones).

I can carry my tray for miles round the building, going up and down stairs, through doors, answering the walkabout phone, all without a single wobble or clink of china...until I get into the room I'm delivering to...then it all goes to pot and my calm, efficient fascade goes out the window and I shake like a leaf, worrying that I'm going to make a mess of things in front of important people. Luckily we have big insulated thermos jugs for the tea and coffee, so sloppage is kept to a minimum, but shakey tea cups make such a racket!

We all understand how you feel big fella. There is nothing worse than worrying about what other people might be thinking of you, we just have to try to block it out as best we can, and remember that other people are feeling just the same. You are not alone.

                              PB xx
