Thank you lovely people -some great ideas there. I should clarify the 18 year old is my neice - Mr R's older brother's daughter, and she lives in London, not oop North.

It's harder than I thought! I do have some nice piccies of her and her brother and sister when they last stayed up here. Might frame one of those, and one of the travel-style ideas. I've stored away all of your ideas for excellent Chrimbo pressies for other nephews and nieces though - we have 14 of them so ALWAYS need inspiration!

Must have been a good light you were standing in.

I always stand in a good light - it's the glow from the halo

Might want to straighten it up a bit my dear - it's slipped again.

I was given a beautiful wooden jewelry box for my 18th that I still use.
I was also given a 'proper' compact, that I actually still use! You can always get it engraved too.

...if she's got everything she could want, and she's very kind and well travelled, what about one of those gift things where you give a goat (or something) to a family in an impoverished country?

Depending on how much time/energy you have.
How about flipping the idea of embarassing an eighteen year old with baby pics of themself & put together a little album of her "old folk"(including Auntie Rhona!) as they were at eighteen.I know my neice would really appreciate the laugh...in fact she's only got a year & a bit to go,so might just get onto it!
