This (last!?) year I made my family a selection of cookies, shortbread and mince pies, a jar of jam/chutney and bought them all a bottle of wine.
I have since been told that most of it didn't last five minutes before it was scoffed, so next year they are getting the same again.
When any of my lot visit they tend to raid the jam stores before they go home anyway!
Oh Dear, we still seem to be hung up on the idea that Christmas is all about the commercial idea of spending money and giving presents - the more expensive the better - and whatever you give it will never be enough.
Don't want to go into the ideology of it -- or the debate between Christmas and the ideology of New Year BUT
if you see it as essentially a family time, what is wrong with making your family treat to everyone the hosting of a meal and family evening
it could be in your own home if you have the resources
the local indian restaurant if you can afford it
the village hall with sausage rolls and sandwiches.
Just a chance for families to get together without a wedding or funeral
Just something for everyone to enjoy
And all hosted and paid for by you, at whatever level you can afford to do it.
No more expensive than whatever you spent on whatever those unwanted gifts were
Just a thought .
What do others think ?
From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

Lovely idea Alice, but...
I'm from Cornwall, and my family live in New Zealand, Cornwall, Devon and Somerset; OH has a sister and family in Wales. Not all of us live close to our nearest and dearest. Sorry to be a pooper.
OH and I and Dexter the dog of course! had a lovely New Years Eve with my mother and father in law round at ours, and Dexters Aunty Margaret from next door (who looks after him while I'm at work) we had a lovely evening, with a buffet, nibbles and drinks etc. I'm very lucky to have such lovely relatives and can't wait for our holiday in February at a super cottage in the middle of nowhere, near Ludlow -complete with Dexter of course!
