Memory Albums

I have been busy lately putting together a album for my Sons 30th birthday. I found a local scrapbooking store and began the task of collecting together lots of photos throughout his childhood and lots of items showing his achievements over the years. I managed to gather infant drawings, school work, school reports, craft handiwork, holiday souvenirs, and lots of pictures of places visited, lived at and pictures of the family.

I discovered that it is quite a art putting these all together in themes and with all the decorative borders etc.

I now have the bug and want to do some more - might look at some garden related albums.

Has anyone else been involved in this type of hobby? any ideas for future albums?

I have found that there's a lot of fun to be had making Christmas and birthday cards but I haven't tied scrapbooking - I daren't, there's only so many hours in the day

A friend of ours is heavily into this kind of thing - she loves putting photo albums together, and makes a lot of cards - that kind of thing. My sister has just started - and has made a few cards, along with all her wedding invites.

Be warned, it can get very, very expensive...

My sisters made one for me for my hen weekend. They'd booked a hotel in London and decorated it all, with this lovely album on a table with Champagne etc. The album was hilarious, with little quotes for each photo. It contained some of the least flattering photographs ever taken (I'm not known for being photogenic) but really captured some brilliant moments of us all growing up - I really loved it.

I'm sure it's not a particularly elegant example of it's kind but it's sooo full of love!

'tis true Wayne, it can get very expensive but once you've made the initial outlay, they should last you for ages, I am thinking in terms of glue, glitter, cutting tools etc.

I have found that I can make quite reasonable Christmas cards by cutting up the ones I had last year, adding a few embelishments and - well, you know about Bob and Fanny

My OH made one for me for my 40Th, he put my baby photos in, school photos, nights out before i even met him (friends were in deep dodo for that one) my old pets I've had over the years, holiday snaps and lots of my mum who sadly died in 1991,I really wouldn't be with out it, I love it.

I am so glad that you have agreed that this is a nice thing to be given. I was not sure if my son would enjoy or cringe. He has a 2 yr daughter so it was also for some history to keep.

I did not spend much money as it was mostly photographs and memento stuff. I decorated some of the pages with education quotes and holiday slogans but used good quality gift wrap. I think the important thing is to have/keep all the milestone stuff. First day at school, first paintings etc.

My son is a ex grape here and he has had several hobbies over the years from unusual candle making to allotment to woodturning so I tried to include all of that. It was a 0-30 record and I hope they will add to the album as years go on.

For me, I think my next project is going to be the 'ideal gardening journal' that I talked about on a previous thread. I want to be able to have photographs along the edges and pockets for seeds etc.

Ooh I love it, I've got several on the go at once (which is quite common among Scrappers), I've got:

Our Holidays (I do a front page with one main photo, and a double page spread mad collage thing, per holiday) - ongoing project

My Best Friend - Mini 6x6 album - ongoing project

Our Wedding Album - 12 x 12 album. Started 8 1/2 years ago and still have one page to finish.

My Pets - 6x6 Mini album going right from when I was a little girl.

My Family - 12 x 12 album. Starts with me, then my big bro, my mother (sadly deceased - painful yet lovely to do), my daddy, Maternal grandparents, paternal grandparents, great aunts and uncles, and where I've got photos I've also done great grandparents.

All my crafty stuff has been in storage since we started the house build, so I'm looking forward to getting on with it again. I like some of the massive kits you get from QVC when they have a craft 'Today's Special value', some of them are incredible prices for the quantity of stuff you get compared to shop prices.

Oh that sounds lovely BumbleB. I would have loved to have been given something like that.

I know nothing about scrapbooking. I'm not game to try any more hobbies, have loads of stuff from my soap/cosmetic making, knitting and now gardening. Also no time. Also, hubby would kill me (or he would, but who else would put up with him?)...

i'm a a scrapbooker, and have been doing it for the last 9yrs!. have gone off the boil a bit with it since getting the allotment last year, but have a couple of things on the go.....finishing last years christmas journal before the prompts come out for this years(an online class from a uk scrapbooking celeb!), and making a calender for my parents in nz with piccies from me and my sis this year.....heavily featuring my 1yr old niece!.
it can be an expensive hobby if you start following all the trends, but in truth, anything works, as long as you're happy with it, and the main thing is you're preserving a memory for the future.

I've been a scrapbooker for about 5 years, and did have an online scrapbook store until a couple of years ago, although I still have TONS of stock left

If you need any advice, give me a shout. There are also a few great Scrapbooking forums out there and lots of great online shops. One piece of advice - try not to shop at HobbyCraft for scrapping supplies if you can help it. They are on the pricey side, and you'd be surprised how little the staff actually know about SBing.

Not sure where Sandgate is (anywhere near Margate?) but I'm just outside Dartford. I get together with some friends to crop every now and then, and you'd be welcome to join us!

My ex daughter in law did one for my sons 21st getting photo's from me scanned them in and printed them herself.
My eldest son's gf did a cd with photo's on and it was brilliant, he wondered why we kept meeting up as it wasnt something we had done very much lol. The cd was played on the huge screen in the place where we had a suprise party for him and my daughter, photo's of her and brothers were included as well as great grandparents, grandparents, and other family members who have sadly passed away. Tears and laughter by all of us.

Thanks everyone.
The album was presented last Saturday for his (wizer) 30th do. It was received well and will now be kept as history for his own children. I now fancy doing a few small projects for myself. I am planning a gardening journal A5 size with a clip ring for page a day calender notes. I attach will attach pics of this years crops in different sections to remind and spur me on during the winter months and sections for seeds to be sown. I would also like to do holiday calenders.

Sandgate is between Folkestone and Hythe. We moved here from Bexleyheath, not far from Rydall Drive, so you would know that. We come up 1 x week to mind Granddaughter Lola (23 months).
We could arrange some spring seedling swops next year.
