I have a ceramic hob, but I've never burned chutney on it My right hand ring is hotter than the left, but it's the one I use most often. The trick is to turn it down before it gets to the temperature you want because they take longer to cool down than gas. Alternatively, do what Di does and move it to a cooler ring for a while.
After 10 years with the ceramic hob I'd hate to go back to gas burners now, fiddly to clean and all the heat concentrated in a small area.

I don't think it's your cooker Two Sheds.
I think it's all in the quality of the pots being used.
And ceramic cookers do come with instructions about the "strength" of the different rings.
Maybe you should stick to the ones on the left for slow cooking.

Oh really? we inherited the cooker with the house, but not any instructions. Now that I have worked out which rings have the demon surge, I will use the left rings.

I have never burnt anything before, because normally things aren't left on there bubbling for 3 hrs.
It's not the pans ... it really is the hob. For 2 hrs it was totally fine, simmering nicely, then all of a sudden it turned itself up to a roaring heat. Still on number 1 setting (well, just a shade under the 1)
