  • BT telephone scam

I'm always a bit sceptical about these emails, and loathe to pass them on - but having read through, this one seems plausible that people may well be doing it, and as stated at the bottom, it may well be the vulnerable and elderly who fall for it.

Here's the email (apologies for spelling etc, I've purely copy/pasted).

The new telephone 'scam' has arrived.

I received a call from a 'representative' of BT,
informing me that he was dis-connecting me because of an unpaid bill. He
demanded payment immediately of £31.00 , or it would be £ 118.00 to
    re-connect at a later date.

The guy wasn't even fazed when I told him I was with
Virgin Media, alle ged ly VM have to pay BT a percentage for line rental!

I asked the guy's name - the very 'English'
    John Peacock with a very 'African' accent - & phone number - 0800 0800 152 0800 0800 152.

Obviously the fella realized I wasn't believing his story, so offered to demonstrate that he was from BT. I asked how & he told me to hang up & try phoning someone - he would dis-connect my phone to prevent this.

AND HE DID !! My phone was dead - no enga ged tone, nothing - until he
    phoned me again.

Very pleased with himself, he asked if that was enough proof that he was with BT. I asked how the payment was to be made & he said credit card, there & then.

I said that I didn't know how he'd done it, but I had absolutely no intention of paying him , I didn't believe his name or that he worked for BT.

    He hung up.

Did 1471 & phoned his fictitious 0800 number - not recognised.
I phoned the police to let them know , I wasn't the first! It's only just started apparently but it is escalating.

Their advice was to let as many people know by word of mouth of this scam. The fact that the phone does go off would probably convince some people it's real, so please let as many friends & family aware of this.

This is good but not that clever. He gave the wrong number - it should have
been 0800 800152 0800 800152 which takes you through to BT Business. The cutting off of
the line is very simple , he stays on the line with the mute button on and
you can't dial out - but he can hear to trying (This is because the person
who initates a call is the one to terminate it). When you stop trying he
cuts off and immediately calls back. You could almost be convinced! The sad
thing is that it is so simple that it will certainly fool the elderly and vulnerable.

Please pass this own to friends and family and be on your guard.

I can tell you how he 'did it' as well. If a phone call is ended by the person MAKING the call, it disconnects. If it is ended by the person who RECEIVED the call, they can't call out until the other party rings off. It is as simple as that!
I once had to scream down the phone at a neighbour who hadn't replaced the handset properly after phoning me. Eventually she heard me, and I was able to make calls again.....

If you unplug your phone from the socket for a few minutes and then replug then this clears the line - I have to do that regularly

I heard about this yesterday. The story I was told was about a woman who had fallen victim. She was a pregnant woman whose husband worked abroad. She took a call telling her it was from BT and her bill was unpaid and they were going to cut her off unless she paid immediately. She told them that she believed her bill was all paid by DD and would check with her bank. The BT rep told her this was too late and unless she paid immediately then she would be cut off. She really thought that she would be able to call her husband and call the bank but after she put down the phone she found that the line was dead. The BT rep called back 10 minutes later with the offer to pay by debit card and so because of her condition she did so.

This 'story' that I was told may well be true. Or it could be just another email scare. As I would have thought that most people would be able to use a mobile phone to check this out. And also can the police not trace who the debit card details have gone to?

One of my mum's boyfriends years ago used to keep a whistle by the phone in case of pranks and scams he'd talk really quietly to get them to put the handset close and then blow the whistle as hard as he could down the line.
