  • Silver Gilt - no, not Chelsea!

I've spent the day at Bridlington at the Yorkshire in Bloom awards. Our village, on only its third year of entry, was awarded a silver gilt medal. Came home, rang round then had a big brew up! We're going to have cake and fizzy at next week's meeting!

Oh how nice. was it won for the village generally being a pretty flowering village? I think it is lovely when everyone joins in and takes pride in the place that they live. It is also so very nice for visitors to see these beautiful english villages.
Well done, I am sure that you feel pride every day to live in such a lovely place.
          Enjoy your cake and champagne!

They take into account the way everyone looks after their gardens but the main thing they look at is the planting we've done as a group. We are a dairy farming village so we've got some old agricultural implements and concreted them into the flower beds we've made - on what were large, wide, boring grass verges. We are trying to get permanent planting established - perennials, bulbs and small shrubs, for sustainability - big buzz word in 'Bloom'. We have planted up a large tractor tyre with herbs and established a wild flower area on a grotty verge near a field entrance. We've got milk churns planted up ourside the Post Office and several projects involving the school children in the village. It's certainly made people proud of the village. There are several of our verge plantings that have been 'taken over' by people living near them. Theirs now look neater than ours! Talk about a challenge!

Well done that village! I love the sound of what you've done. Sounds like you had some really good ideas and a big team effort to pull it all together. Any chance of some photos? Would love to see some of what you did.
