  • Although not taking part in the Big Jim competition, I have been keeping an eye on the leaderboard and am mightily impressed with the number of grapes on there.
Kep it up guys and gals !

If they start colouring, that does mean they won't grow any more.

        • I can only say that that is what I have noticed with my cayenne chillies, once they start to change colour they don't get any bigger.

          • Jings ! One more worry ! Stop the Big Jims from colouring up ! I'll add it to the list of instructions I give the every morning :
            Grow long
            Don't grow fat
            Don't turn red
            .........

            • Bramble ! 17cms ! How your Big Jim is growing ! Congratulations to a Grape . Well done indeed. Mine seem to be stuck at 10cm. |Getting fatter by the minute, but no longer. Great to see a grape up there in a world competition.

              • I can see that I'm going to have to get a greenhouse just so that I can join in with this next year!

                • Congrats Bramble! Looks like you are going to overtake us if our Big Jim doesnt start growing again soon!

One of our Big Jim's went to Yoanbob yesterday, complete with 0.5cm chillies and plenty of flowers, so she may well be joining in with the comp!

Dont worry about the greenhouse Hazel, we've one in the glasshouse, 1 outside and 2 on the windowsill, and the indoor ones are also fruiting now!

                  • You don't need a greenhouse Hazel. Mine are on the windowsill (I'm frightened to put my babies out in the greehouse) Maybe that's why they are only 10cms. I hope you will join in next year - it will be a different chillie offcourse. And it is fun.

                    • Alice and Mrd D, I'm afraid my big jim has run out of steam. Its been stuck at 17.5 for the last couple of days with not a move. Never thought about them stopping growing if they start to colour. Just another thing to worry about.
By the way, does anybody know what the record was for the Joes long last year. I have one measuring 25cm. Just out of interest of course.

                      • Don't worry folks, the contest doesn't end till September - lots of time for the plants to mature a bit and grow bigger chillies!

                        • Our two seem to have run out of steam too Bramble, one stuck at 19.5cm, and the other is stuck at about 18cm! They havent started to change colour yet tho, so its still possib;e that they may start a growing again after the weather improves a bit!

Mind you, it is still flowering, and has another couple of chillies growing, so its not time to give up yet! And we do have another couple of backup plants just a flowering too, so we're still in the competition!

Would be good to see a grape win tho wouldnt it!

                            • Just harvested my big jim at 11cm. Stalk was starting to go a bit funny so didn't want to risk losing it altogether so its now in my fridge awaiting a worthy meal. Got new fruits starting to form, so will turn my attention to cosseting them.

                              • The chillies on my Big Jim are fabulous - big fat juicy looking chillies. BUT they have been 10 - 11 cm long for weeks. Not budging at all. I talk to them nicely every morning and say how much I appreciate their fat beauty but could they just grow a little longer. Please. Like all children, they don't listen.
But it is great to see Grapes doing so well in there. And if a Grape won - well - I think we would have to have a party. I've heard the Irish do that kind of thing well. Bramble - you could start stocking the freezer with sausage rolls now
