    • I'm giving them as much natural light as i can, and keeping them moist but not wet. Providing the cat doesn't knock them over they'll be fine. Hubby complaining that the plants are getting more TLC than him!! (he 'mothers' his koi just as much tho!! )

      • Checked our chilli seeds this morning, we've had about 7 or so germinate so far out of the 2 or 3 seeds of each of the 11 varieties we're planning on growing, so a poor germination rate as yet, and nothing from the Big Jim's yet, but we will see what happens! I know they can take a good while to germinate, so I'm not pannicking yet, we are still very early with this batch, going to try another batch in about 2 or 3 weeks time, once (I hope) the current batch have germinated and are growing away nicely!

            • Hello SBP, I hope you didn't think my bell peppers were the Big Jims - had a problem posting and had to change it. I planted the Big Jim on 1st January, to mark the official opening of the competion. The bell peppers I started in December. I didn't mean to start so early, but I sprouted some seeds just to check the germination viability and once they had sprouted I hadn't the heart to discard them - so there they are, and looking well.

                • Your peppers look really good Alice, what variety are they?

                  • Sorry Alison, I don't know. It was saved seed from a pepper plant I bought last year. It produced lovely red peppers in abundance so I saved the seed. Don't know if it will come true to type but I still have some seed. If you want some just PM your address.

                    • Thanks for the offer Alice but I really must not grow any more types of peppers or chillies (or tomatoes, cucumbers, beans, courgetettes..................). Just being nosey really. Hope they come true to form or something equally tasty.

                        • Hi alice,
How did you get your red bell peppers to put on so much growth in Dec. Where did you have them. They look just great. Am sooo jealous. Tell the secret please.

                          • Hello Bramble, I set them to sprout in December using the damp paper method just to check the viability of the seed. They all sprouted about instantly so I planted them in 3" pots and put them on a south facing windowsill. They just grew on. So no secret, just great wee plants. One looked a bit leggy so I pinched out the growing tip and it's starting to bush so might nip out some others.

                              • the two Big Jims I put to germinate have finally done so! I will pot them up today but wondered if they are better in a 2 inch or 4 inch pot - any advice or are you all busy trying to win?
