  • Good luck Mrs D. 1 that has just germinated ! What are they like. Mine were - diificult - is I think the word I can use on here, but the one successful plant is coming into flower. I have some seeds left but I'm not going to plant them. My other chillies and peppers are doing so much better.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

    • Same here Alice, my Naga Jolokia are just forming their first flowers, but nothing on the Big Jim's as yet! Just hoping that they will come on all of a sudden like!

Most of the other 11 varieites we've got are somewhere between 4" and 1" tall, but as I'm not risking them outside until the end of May, their smaller size is not a problem as yet! (The true problem is a lack of space for seedlings and plants, we've evey windowsill, plus 3 large wire mesh 'staging' things in the back bedroom filled, plus the walk in plastic 6' by 4' greenhouse stuffed full, and a few more hardy seedlings in the unheated plot greenhouse aswell! I'm hoping to move some more into the plot greenhouse at the weekend, then I'll have a bit of room to plant some more seeds to germinate! )

      • I noticed yesterday that quite a few of my chillies have the beginnings of flower buds, including my big Jim's - how exciting!

I have to say that out of all the varieties i'm growing te Big Jim's have been one of the easiest and are romping away in growth - lets hope the fruits are up to scratch!

        • Well, we planted out a selection of our chillies in the greenhouse on plot1 today, 10 varieties of chilli, 1 each, including our largest Big Jim who is now standing about 14" tall and not only has flowers, but 1 small chilli on it too!

The best chillies we've got growing just have to be the two Naga Jolokia's that we planted in the greenhouse today, both about 3' tall, both with plenty of flowers and a couple of chillies each! Just have to see how they all do now that they are in their permanent positions, tho we've still a fair few to plant out once the frost risk is passed!

          • Congratulations Mrs D ! My big Jim is about the same size and planty flower buds but none have opened yet so still waiting to see chillies. Never thought I would even see them this far as they were so slow to begin with.

            • My Big Jims are now about 5 inches high - not holding my breath for flowers or fruit!! Have lots of fruit on my chili grown from a GYO freebie seed last year and overwintered in the dining room after the plastic greenhouse was destroyed.

              • Don't worry Shirl, none of mine are anywhere near the size of Mrs D or Alice's but they're looking healthy and I'm sure they'll crop well given a bit of time.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

                • Shirley, your Big Jim seems to be trying to grow in a very negative environment. You have been criticising the poor thing since it was a seed. Maybe it needs encouragement and love. If you tell it that it will never amount to anything it may start to believe it

(I'm just kidding, I hope it is a case of the hare and the tortoise for you)

LOL - I have been chatting to them - honest - haven't sworn enough methinks Hoping they were waiting for the greenhouse to be built and now that they are out there they will suddenly put on a huge growth spurt!

                        • Alice, I too have got a lot of blossom but no chilli's yet. You know what they say, The last shall be first......

And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.
