We live in a modern house, built from new to have only central heating, but if we ever move I'll look for a house that has an open fire, or can be converted back
My Dad was a builder in the 1950s and 60s and a lot of his work was converting open fires to gas or electric. He said he would never have a house that didn't have an open fire as if there was a strike or similar of gas or electric, you could always find something to burn - he'd been a boy in The Depression you see.
