Container Plants Overwinter

Good Morning Folks,

As I have a Polly tunnel now I wondered what plants I should move from the patio over winter, list below:-

Citrus
Olive
Fig
Rosemary
Sage
Mint

Rosemary, sage and mint should be fine on the patio. Citrus doesn't do frost, so that would be better under cover. Not sure about the fig and the olive.

I'd agree with that - although my sage sulked a bit last winter, but then what didn't!

I'm pretty sure Fig and Olive will be ok, I guess depending on how back you get hit with frost where you are, I get hit hard here

My Olive tree is in the ground so has to stay out, it has survived three winters. As yours is in a container perhaps you could leave it out but put bubblewrap round the pot just to protect the roots a bit. As rustylady says, I leave my mint sage and rosemary outside. You could always take a few cuttings as an insurance.

Have to confess that we've left out lemon trees over winter, with a bit of protection around the roots. They've been covered with snow year after year and survived. The worst year was when we tried to bring them under cover - they didn't seem to like it.

Our olive has also survived a few Sheffield winters so far, as have the woody herbs.

I was reading that one has to acclimatise citrus fruits gradually to being indoors or undercover. Like hardening off in reverse

Wrap up roots, I doubt any of them will die of cold. The trees may not be productive after an outdoor winter (well the fig should be OK because it goes dormant), but as long as the roots don't get too chilled, all should be well otherwise.
