  • What I did today - away from the lottie

I just feel obliged to share this with you all - maybe you can laugh as much as I did!

When I got up this morning the first thing I saw outside was a very flat tyre -nearside of my car. Closed door, had a cup of tea and sat down to think. Decided to deal with car after lunch.

After lunch opened boot and lifted mat to look at spare tyre - it wasn't under the mat in the boot! Went indoors again and had another cup of tea. I've owned the car for 7 years and never before had to deal with a flat.

Vaguely remembered that spare wheel was under frame of car and I would need to undo a big screw-thing to get at it. Opened boot to look for wheel brace/big screwdriver. Couldn't find wheelbrace. Went back inside and cried.

Decided to ring local garage for advice. Tame mechanic spoke to me. Followed advice - couldn't find wheelbrace/screwdriver thingy. Mechanic took pity and offered to come out. Thanked him and made another cup of tea. Wondered how I could have lost the wheelbrace/big screwdriver thingy, and how much it would cost for another one.

Mechanic arrived, opened boot and removed wheelbrace thingy which was stuck to the wheelarch in the corner. I made him a cup of tea. He removed spare tyre and jacked up the car, removed the wheelnuts with a mega drill, changed the tyre and took it away for repair/changing.

Felt stupid and went to make another cup of tea.

Collected wheel from garage later, so grateful and happy to pay the cost, mostly because I know that even if I had found the wheelbrace/screwdriver thingy and got the wheel out, I would NEVER have been able to undo those nuts holding the wheel on.

Got home and can't stop laughing at how stupid I'd been. Decided Madderbat is an appropriate name.

I'm glad Madderbat that there's others like me - that's the sort of thing I would do, but good you can laugh about it (and share it with us!).

My OH works nights and I have had to knock on my neighbours door to get him to open a jar for me before now cos Steve would kill me if I woke him up for that!

As for cars, I'll never forget going to the garage to get petrol and discovering a flat tyre, changing it and just as I was doing up the nuts a knight in shining armour who had watched me do the hard bits came over and asked if I needed any help tightening them up. I managed to keep my reply ladylike!

Glad you can see the funny side now, although its not always that funny while happening.

Reminds me of the time when we had a longwheel base 10 seater landrover (and no powered steering and I'm only little!). I came out of a drama rehearsal one night to find a flat tyre. I have never seen the male chorus and principals disappear so fast! - all except one bless him, who offered to drive me home and bring my husband back to change the tyre!

Thank you all for words of support. I felt a particular fool because in my youth I was capable of doing most things, but am at the stage of life when I have to acknowledge my in-capabilities, which is quite painful!!!
No 1 son is away at the moment but promises me a lesson in "wheel-brace finding" when he gets back!
