Just read your post and I loved it, I so agree life was much simpler in the 60's, 70's. I can remember watching "The Wooden Top's" and wanting a spotty dog. I must have been about 4...Happy Days...Thanks enrich. xx

Wind forwards a few years and that reminds me a lot of my childhood (I was 10 in 1990 so by some standards I was incredibly lucky to have that kind of life - me and some of my friends were probably among the last to have a similar level of freedom - both from parents and from technology/fashion/instant communication)...
...for some reason I had a feeling the Venus Fly Trap was coming at the end.

I remember wanting one when I was young. For some reason I don't have the same desire to own one now, though I do get excited when I see them - I'll probably get one some day!


Tell me though, am I alone in that when I first heard about fly-traps I thought they were made up?

Me too! And I discovered my OH had always hankered after one!
We bought one, it was in-fact virtually impossible to use, my Ma was right, it was a useless piece of junk, the professor owl she actually got me was much more fun!

I had The Chopper bike when I was a kid, I use to ride up and down changing gears like a rally driver, they were brilliant for giving backies on.

My 10 year old son moans at me to get him a Venus Fly Trap everytime we go to the garden centre, maybe I should as I wouldn't want him to feel deprived in years to come, lol.

...I'd suggest making him earn it. Chores for money and all that.

Could be a great way to not only get him what he wants but teach the real value of money too.

"You don't get 'owt f' nowt" as they say... though probably in a less northern accent around your part of the world.

Great story, Just like me growing up in the 70's. Except the bit about the army bit cos i'm a girl.

Also guessed the plant, I've struggled to keep these alive, however have no problem with other Carnivorous plant species.

Thank you all for the compliments about my post, I'm Glad you enjoyed it. It took me a while to write as I said before I'm no writer, I didn't even pass English at school due to dyslexia so I'm quite shocked how many of you bothered to read it and in some cases twice. I'm so glad I didn't just write "Hey I've just bought a fly trap" now even though it would have been a lot easier.

I didn't realize how many others shared my facination with Venus Fly Traps either, if I can keep these ones I have alive I might just try to grow some from seed which I gather is a bit of a challenge.

Obviously since you have had Bean you obviously didn't have the accident with the gear handle. I remember on more than one occasion friends screaming in a high pitch voice and running to their mums as their privates were crushed against the gear knob of their choppers, at least they can all sing in the church choir in the Soprano section even now

Aha, look again my friend - t'is the Budgie, not the Chopper, not even the Tomohawk. I was too young for the Chopper (being only borned in '75), I swiftly moved onto the Raleigh Boxer after the Budgie, and then I had a BMX of some discription before moving onto a "racer" with - get this, 10 gears!!!
