  • New allotment idea in Berwick

Brilliant new scheme froma Berwick farmer -he gets guaranteed income for future planning and locals get their allotments

Gardeners urged to dig in at new alltoments - Berwick Today

Rents look a bit higher than council ones though. When we looked into private allotments we though about £60 for a half size plot would be too expensive for people to consider, when the council ones go for £20 per full size plot.
I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!

Sorry I don't know what the typical cost of allotments are. It was on the local news this morning and all of the allotment gardeners thought it was great. I suppose it's supply and demand and some folks will pay a premium if there's a long waiting list. Have to say though that the basic idea makes sense - if the price is right.

We had a thread involving the vine members plot rents a while ago..............massive fluctuations across the UK, but I would hazzard a guess at about £40 being average?

With an 8 to 10 year wait for allotments in the area and enquiries from as far away as Edinburgh I suppose he's on a winner no matter what the price.

In principal I agree its a great idea, and tbh the guy is simply cashing in on a demand. With half the plots gone already, clearly people are happy to pay above average prices, and also he is a private enterprise, not a council who are duty bound to provide allotments for its citizens should they want them.
