My take on taking a view is a teaspoonful of out of date looks-ok tamarind is probably safe, but anything in large quantities wouldn't get the same treatment. I'm a bit funny about keeping dried beans and pulses for too long. That said, and to link the Farm Foods Meat thread to this one, in a glorious union, I'd probably rather eat three year old chickpeas than a £2.99 chicken...I don't roll on Shabbos

I'd not worry about dried stuff too much so long as it's been kept dry, chickpeas are boiled up anyway and that kills all sorts in my view!
Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.
Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I trust my own judgement more than a date label. In our Waitrose there are a few of us 'bargain hunters' who go round the fresh food counters at 5 to closing, and freeze anything freezable. If it's shell fish, it will end up in either a curry or a paella.....Flowers come in too many colours to see the world in black-and-white.

I'm the same HB. I trust my nose since what you taste comes from the smell of it. If it's something particularly dodgey like shelfish or meat I'll err on the side of caution. But I've got some mince in my fridge that looked a little brown and says "Use by: 26th September", but I'm sure it'll be fine in a chilli tonight.Current Executive Board Members at Ollietopia Inc:
