We puppysat recently, for a fortnight.
The little doggy missed his owners and cried at night, or if left alone daytimes.... but not for long.
Evil Two_Sheds used the parrot's water-sprayer if it barked or whined: and it was so surprised it shut up. After one or two sprays, I only had to raise the sprayer and it stopped whining.
Of course, when it was a good quiet doggy it got rewards: treats, walks, cuddles.... but barking was not going to be tolerated.

Our three GSDs bark when they hear the gate sensor go when anyone walks through it, luckily the gates are shut at night but if we get pheasants taking the mick in the garden, or muntjac squealing in the fields then that can set them off at night but then.... our nearest neighbours are about 250 yards away

If we get an intruder (not happened in 10 years so far but not counting my chickens) then the dogs will definitely tell us about it

We have a rescued pooch and she only barks when someone comes to the door as she is protecting our patch. I do not understand the mentality of folk who have dogs and then leave them out all hours. They are totally insentive to the needs of the animal and of cours to that of their neighbours. Dogs only bark alot because they have never been trained not to do so from a pup.
Dog owners need to take responsibility for how their animals behave as the bad owners ensure that responsible dog owners are tarred with the same brush.

Soooo with you there Ladies - Dogs bark for a reason, and can be trained out of it - or, better still, not allowed to get into the habit in the first place.

My 2 big hates = Barking dogs and screaming kids - they do it for a reason - find the reason - sort it - seeeemples! I'm a big fan of the water squirty bottle - well, for dogs anyway!

Our ex-neighbours had rescue GSDs - coz they already had one, a big garden, and lied about their working hours, they were given more. The poor beggars were shut up more than 8 hours a day, and never walked. The only time they ever left the premises was to visit the Vet. They'd bark at the slightest noise (me opening my car door) and continue for 20-30 minutes each time.

Used to drive me potty sometimes - perhaps that's why I'm potty . We have a dog - he only barks to come in if we've forgotten him!

Did PMSL the day one of them went mental at the lounge window and ripped down all their curtains tho LOL!

lol I am TRYING to potty train my 2 year old, can I use the squirter on him too??

What your neighbours(idiots) are doing is utterly, utterly unacceptable - noise nuisance and i believe they might be breaking the law. are they in a council house - you have got them if so - otherwise tape the noise and call the noise nuisance wotsits(someone help me here- what are they called exactly?!!- they will discreetly come out and tape noise nuisance at inconvenient hours) we actually moved house this summer because we couldn't stand our neighbours - their nasty rat of a bichon frise was part of the problem. I DETEST barking dog's owners - the RSPCA cannot help either- i did call them and they said they cannot do anything even though a dog barking constantly must be a stressed, neglected dog - there are no laws to protect them over that matter, in THIS country.

At about 5 am one of the neighbours' (3 doors down) dogs started barking non-stop. Now they usually do this - almost all day as they tend to be left outside, but for whatever reason they started extra early this morning and quite how I didn't jump out of bed and storm round there is beyond me.

If I'm going to be deprived of sleep because of inconsiderate neighbours, I'll be damned if I don't return the favour.

If the dogs wake you again pop around and hammer on the door until the neighbours wake up and tell them their dogs are barking the place down and they should check that they don't have intruders.

On a Saturday or Sunday morning, when you are up early to sort out the lottie or summat, go knock up the neighbours and ask if everything is ok 'cos you haven't heard the dogs this morning

Not necessarily. Dogs barking outside the back of the house and owners sleeping at the front of the house.

If I had all my double glazed windows shut I doubt I'd hear anything at all outside my house.

I have dogs btw and they have a dog flap to let themselves in an out and there is a park at the back of my garden and there are goings on which the dogs sometimes serenade. If they won't settle down and shut up I just block their access to outside.

My dog barks if he's in the garden and hears someone walk past and I shut him up so as not to offend the neighbours. When someone broke into our shed at 3am and we needed him to bark he just whined at the nasty people to go away and we ignored him. A lesson there to be learnt!

Please don't blame the dogs - it's the bladdy owners, as Wayne said in the first place. My friend recently suffered a relationship breakdown and she and her mutt were homeless. (Won't go into details on that). Anyway I offered for her and the hound from hell to stay at mine till she could find somewhere else. That dog had been alternately caged most of the day, shouted at, not allowed to be a companion (by ex-partner), and for the first few days she was an absolute nightmare (friend was in no state to do anything, totally devastated by ex) so in my usual bossy way I took over. Dog is allowed reasonable access to the house, even we have to go out she is not caged - she has a large hallway, blankets and her toys. She has more or less free run of the garden when we are home, and she is told when her behaviour is unacceptable. She has accepted that and I will miss her so much when they move out next week. Dogs can be trained - the owners should be too! I coped with four children and countless pets, and they were all mostly well behaved because they had limits set. Sorry, my rant over now.

There is a woman next to our lotty site, who has various large dogs staying with her (when her recalcitrant grown up kids can't cope with them) : Ridgebacks, Rotties etc.

Bark, bark, bark all day long. It does your head in. Or did: you've just made me realise that I haven't heard them all summer.

Perhaps it's because I posted her an official-looking warning letter about Barking Dogs and Noise Nuisance? lol
