  • Price hike!!!

    'bainsburys' chilli soup
    64p a tin last week
    78p a tin this week

What is going on here then???? grrrrrrrrr

any ideas - is there an international shortage of chilli's?

Yeah, you have to keep your eyes open don't you. Basics jaffas were 34p one week and 84p the next!! Suddenly not such a bargain.

I thought our little village shops would be hideously expensive by comparison to the supermarkets, but they check their prices regularly, and in many instances are cheaper than the big boys.

Not in my house there isn't......But at least if you'd been hit over the head with a baseball bat, you'd know you'd been "Mugged" .
I don't know about "Price Hike", that daylight robbery, I wouldn't buy it just on principle.

If you've got some chillies then make your own, no worries then!

I am very untrusting of supermarket pricing. I always double check prices as often you will find the larger boxes/packs/jars work out more expensive - I think they work on the principle that most shoppers assume family-sized means better value, and just grab them off the shelves

            Supermarket chain Sainsbury's has posted a 5.4% rise in second-quarter sales -

That will include the extra on the chilli soup

I'm rubbish at checking when offers end (I usually shop online for 'big' shop) and today got a delivery that was a LOT more expensive that I thought because all the offers I thought I was cleverly taking advantage of had ended at midnight. I rang Tesco and explained my thickery, and they kindly agreed to refund the difference. Which I thought was pretty good service!

You can find bargains in the most unlikely places - Chatsworth Farm Shop near here is brilliant but can be pricey, but still found a couple of things there much cheaper than the supermarket.

If you've got a local "workers cooperative" type ethical shop - go there.

I find any excuse I can to visit this place ( Unicorn Grocery - Organic produce and wholefoods ) on the other side of Manchester and they are almost always considerably cheaper for organic produce than supermarkets are for non-organic... plus you get the added bonus of knowing you're helping to stop supermarkets putting local businesses out of business.

As a sign up in Unicorn says "One choice is no choice."

I'm sure I don't need to persuade anyone on here about the benefit of eating seasonally, but the food in that place (from fruit and veg to the spices, dried fruits, flour, nuts and so on that they bag up at the back of the store) is incredible and I'm always surprised at how little I spend despite being incapable of sticking to my shopping list in there.

If you've got a place like it near you, use it, you'll be glad you did.

I love Unicorn but don't get there much. Used to use it a bit when I worked not far away. These days I use Northern Harvest quite a lot which is a local delivery thing who will deliver from a range of local shops, delis and much more. I was initially concerned that it would cost a lot more but actually if you use it wisely then I've found I spend a lot less, especially when coupled with my own veggies.

Hi Folks, Glad to hear Sainsburys are making a profit!
It's the girls at work that buy and noticed the price change....I must admit to buying tins of soup, but mostly I try to make my own!
I did try a tin of said soup, have to say "not really impressed". Will try and make my own version now!
I love winter soups and raid my plot for all it's worth. Even the tops of the sprout plants go into my soups.....yummy!

Alison - Thanks for the tip about Northern Harvest...
I'll check them out in a bit (dunno if they'll deliver round here though - not just Warrington is it?)

Unicorn is a brilliant place though. I just wish they weren't a vegan shop...I'd love a place like that for animal based stuff too.

i was in a sainsbury type supermarket quite a while back, when i heard one of the old hands showing the new boy how to stack shelfs when he said "what do i do if an item expands other another items price? answer " dont worry unless its cheaper customers wont want to question it when they check out."Which is true often i notice items are not always over their correct price, so i allways check after being "stung" once or twice
a good put down line to use !
