Once again I find myself reading these posts and thinking 'I'm so glad it's not just me'!

I don't approve of the multiple exclamation, but I found myself putting one in every text message I sent, and try as I might I couldn't convince myself that it wasn't needed. It's like I have to say something, so incredible, in every text that it warrants one!

I must admit that when writing on forums and sending texts I tend to ignore punctuation a lot of the time, but when at work I am a stickler for using correct punctuation as I find it incredibly unprofessional to send out error filled text. I also notice when things are sent to me that have apostrophes in the wrong places, commas missing, etc. This reflects badly on the person/company that has sent it.
Yes, it is possible to understand the sentences without them, but I take that to be because I was taught well as a child and am able to read words by the general outline and not by the actual letters used. There was a piece of text doing the rounds some time ago which had the first and last letters of each word transposed and it was surprisingly easy to read. Also, when vowels are left out of words, they are equally easy to read.
Smileys are my big thing - but never in work emails, unless being sent to a colleague.

I know you don't appreciate excessive use of the humble exclamation mark, but should there not be some form of punctuation at the end of that sentence?Or am I right in assuming that smilies are an apt replacement?(??????)

I saw Tony Hawk (The author not the skateboarder) on television a while ago tell the story that he had become so disgruntled with the disparity in the usage of the apostrophe between "Barons Court" and "Earl's Court" that he wrote a letter to Ken Livingston about it.
Ken, being one of those rare politicians who has some degree of a sense of humour, wrote him a letter in response with complete mis use of the apostrophe the entire way through.

                      A nice little anecdote

As far as James and his ball, the first one is grammatically correct not the second. I had that one well and truly rammed home as a child and as one of my brothers is called James....welll
I can't believe anyone would even consider removing it from our written language. Just because you can understand a written sentence without it doesn't make it a correctly written sentence.
We humans have the capacity to understand all sorts of written nonsense including typos in newspapers etc. but that does not mean we should change the written language to reflect the poor level of litteracy that exists.
It's the difference between coherent and cohesive.
                        Shall I get my coat
I could be wrong, however, I believe the second used to be correct but as the English language has evolved, the former is now correct.

Thanks for the link for the interrobang, like it!

If only I had an interrobang, I'd use it.

Just glad I didn't mistype that as internbang.

Just don't google internbang through images, not whilst you are at work, anyway.

The interrobang or interabang[1] (pronounced /ɪnˈtɛrəbæŋ/),

erm - how does one pronounce that again?
