My chief question regarding this diet echoes one of bluemoon's points.
"If the paleolithic diet was so healthy, why was their lifespan so short?"
I can't help but feel that this diet doesn't take into account some of the nutrients the Grains, Beans and Potatoes DO contain which are essential for a healthy life.

Was the appendix not originally for our grass and leaf eating period when we were tree dwellers
I heard the appendix is to make those 'friendly bacteria' that come nowadays in little tiny bottles of yogurty milk that cost a fortune.
I couldn't live without some 'unhealthy' foods.
(They are only unhealthy when you have too much of them.)
We are healthy eaters most of the time. About 85/15 split.

I wonder if our "poor health" in modern times is more about the crap that's added to our food from start to finish...pesticides & fertilisers in the growing process & colourings, preservatives, flavour enhancers blah blah de blah as opposed to the fact we learnt to cook spuds & beans etc to vary our diet???
I did try a Raw Food Diet years ago...the aim was that about 90% of your diet was in its raw state...including sprouted beans.....but allowed you the odd cooked bit of what you fancied. From what I remember,I felt OK on it,can't remember any notable extra vitality, just that I got bored of it pretty quick!

Now I'm growing my own Veg. I'm getting really fussy about what I buy. Farm Shops and Farmers Markets are favourite, but more expensive. I do agree on the additive thing though.
I did the Atkins several years ago after my Sister had great success with it. I found it very easy, as I have an intolerance to grain-based foods. I did miss bread and pasta, even though I don't eat a lot of either. I felt far healthier and far more energetic on it. The worst thing was not being allowed alcohol, so I would have a little, which of course, slows down the weight-loss
My will-power gave way gradually, although I had lost a couple of stone, but it gradually went on again. I've been contemplating doing it again, but have just stocked up on booze!

My dentist dared to prescribe me antibiotics the day after I got my weekend wine in!As the painkillers are keeping the pain at bay I've decided the course can wait til Monday!
As for booze & diets...a liquid only diet shifts the pounds in record time...just not so sure on the other health benefits!!!

I did the Atkins a while ago as well, I also lost a couple of stone and I also got bored after a while and gradually phased myself back into my usual food.
I don't particularily want to loose weight.............just re-distribute it a bit!

I lost over a stone- and put it on again....seems to be the norm with Atkins
Anyone continue with any of his foods?? I still add cream to my scrambled eggs and I learned to enjoy neat Vodka

Palaeolithic man had a VERY short life span - probably not more than 30 years for most - if they made it out of childhood. This was, as has been said, due to the other difficulties of life, not the diet. However, the fact that they didn't live long enough to get heart disease, cancer etc, is NOT proof that the diet prevents them. Sloppy thinking, that boy!
The chap says in the article that to eat grains and pulses, we need to cook them to destroy toxins. So what's the problem there? Toxins destroyed - get trenching lads.
This sort of sloppy pseudo-science makes me a titchy bit cross!
That's if they made it out of the womb isn't it Flum; as we started standing up, which gave us use of our arms to capture and eat more meat, which made our brains grow - only the women who could give birth to children with the bigger brains survived - which is why we evolved with only a 9 month gestation period rather than nearer to the 18 months of our closest relatives.
