  • The Garden Museum London

Hi everybody, I did a search to see if there was already a post about this exhibition but I could not find one so here goes.

There is currently an exhibition on "Growing your own" over the last 100 years at The Garden Museum in London, which is on The South Bank opposite The Houses of Parliament.
I thought some of the grapes might be interested, maybe a trip could be organised for those without transport.

Below is an extract from the Museum website:-

    THE GOOD LIFE...
100 YEARS OF GROWING YOUR OWN
    6th October 2009- 7th March 2010
    Admission £6 / £5 Concs

2009 has been a year of ‘Growing Your Own’ – from allotments to balconies and window-boxes, people throughout Britain are growing their own and enjoying a slice of ‘The Good Life’.

Discover the 100 year history behind the country’s current love affair with growing food in our new exhibition. From the Allotment Act of 1908, through WWII’s Dig For Victory campaign and the Self-Sufficiency movement of the 1970s to the present day, paintings, photographs, personal memoirs and even the odd home-spun sweater will tell the story of why, how and what we have grown.

The exhibition also tackles the burning questions behind today’s fashion for allotments and kitchen gardening, asking whether “grow your own” is just a credit-crunch fad or whether people in Britain are really passionate about growing food.

It sounds really interesting and as its on until March 2010 there is plenty of time to go along. You pay to enter The Garden Museum, but then this exhibit is free.

The website is Museum of Garden History

    Cheers everyone.

Gardening should always be a pleasure and never a chore, only someone forgot to tell the weeds

I read an article about this in yesterday's Times, and thought it sounding interesting. We are going to London next Saturday for the day (on the train - only 2.5 hours from Darlington, but leaves at 6.30am) so I will try and persuade the rest of the family to visit. Youngest daughter is currently studying WW2 in history so the Dig for Victory bit will appeal to her. Thanks for the link to the museum - saved me searching

      Thanks for this David,
I had read about the exhibition so having a bit more info is very useful. May be able to get there early December as I have a visit to London planned already

The Garden Museum sounds lovely, if only for the cafe and shop! £6 entry is a bit steep though?

Thanks for that - looks well worth a visit. The chances of going are slim, don't really like London as a day out (too much hassle, too many people), but if anyone wants to report back after visiting, I may make the effort!
